Saturday. THE VERMONT ELECTION. Democratic Papers See Promise of Advantage for Wilson. So far as the state election in Vermont holds value as a national political omen, in face of the complicated situation the result indicates sweeping Democratic victory and decisive Republican defeat in the November balloting. Exact reports of the returns will be unavailable for a day or two, but they are sufficiently definite to justify certain deductions. The most significant features is the depth of the schism shown to exist in Republican ranks. Colonel Roosevelt's new party appears to have drawn almost Its entire strength from the old line Republican contingent.?Atlanta Constitution. The progressive movement hasn't shaken the Democrats in the slightest. That is the situation in Vermont and it may very well be the situation in the nation at large. If the Vermont formula holds for the whole country the November election will show that the Roosevelt defection has sufficed to bleed the Republican party to death, .but the attempt to transfuse the political vitality into his Progressive party has been a complete failure.? Charleston Post. If the temper manifested by the voters of Vermont yesterday is exhibited all over the country in November in like manner, it is easy to see what will happen. Illinois gave Taft 630,000 votes in 1908, it gave Bryan 450,000. If the Republican vote is divided there as it was divided in Vermont, Wilson electors will be chosen f>y an immense plurality. Iowa gave Taft 275.000. it gave Bryan 200,000. t he ravages of Roosevelt will effect a similar result there. ? New York Times. The gratifying thing is that the Democrats increased tneir vote, increased it so much that it is a fair conclusion that they will increase their vote in practicjiJly all of the states in November, thus making sure the election of Governor Wilson. The dissatisfied Republicans are going to the Progressive and Democratic parties, but no Democrats are going to the Progressive party. That is a conclusion to be drawn from the Vermont election. It isn't to be wondered at, therefore, th Governor Wilson is highly pleased with the result in Vermont.?Savannah News. It appears that Mr. Roosevelt drew his votes chiefly from Republican sources. This impairment of the Taft strength was not sufficient in the rockribbed Republican state of Vermont to defeat the regulars, but if the Progressives shall attract a like proportion of the vote in the so-called doubtful states, where the two old parties have been almost on an equality, and if at the same time the Democrats shall bring out anything like their full voting force, Mr. Roosevelt will be en~ 1 I ' -II..K ...V,ooomc ho ilDIfU IU mini ovvin.i iv? w* his main object?defeat the Republican party.?Philadelphia Ledger. There is much in the result in Vermont yesterday to give encouragement to the Democrats. The fact that the Progressives have made as creditable a showing as they have assures accessions to the ranks of that party in other states, and particularly mil this strength will be drawn from the Republican ranks, as has been the case in Vermont.?Columbus Enquirer-Sun. ? Arthur Robinson, a young white man of Orangeburg county was convicted last Friday of manslaughter on account of the killing of his brother Mike, and sentenced to the penitentiary for eighteen years. Judge Rice, who tried the case and imposed sentence. refused to grant a new trial. AT THE CHURCHE8. PRESBYTERIAN. No prayer meeting thi9 week. TRINITY METHODIST.
