Having a Great Tima.?The editors still have charge of New York from Two Hundred Fifty-fifth street to Cas^ tie Garden, from North river to the farthest confines of Prospect park, Brooklyn; they have been seeing the sights. This includes theatres, roof gardens, restaurhnts, subways, the elevated railways and other things too r numerous to mention. Many atten^ Hons have been shown these visiting South Carolina editors, especially by the New York Herald and the New York World, The World tomorrow will have two columns contributed by * members of the South Carolina State Press association. One of the most enjoyable tours was given by the Mergenthaler Linotype company. This was done in fine style, a representative calling at the hotel with a row or auiomooues, ugais the men. flowers for the women, and a good time, with many courtesies, for all. i High water mark was reached this t afternoon at the hotel parlors, when J. E. Norment. In behalf of the members of the association, presented a gold watch, suitably inscribed, to President August Kohn. Members are all enthusiastic over his management and his success. i In behalf of the association, Mr. Norment also presented a brooch to Mrs. Kohn, whose interest and co-operation have meant so much to the success of this trip. The trip has been great and will be long remembered as one of the best in the history of the association. The State has been read daily by all members, and has has been devoured even j like unto a Delmonlco menu. All are , well. Some sail Tuesday, others re- : 1 main for longer enjoyment of the numerous pleasures. The Hotel Woodward has fitted admirably Into all the i other pleasures of this trip.?New York correspondence to the State, Sunday. Attacks Tariff System.?An attack upon the protective tariff system by an , American manufacturer who claimed , to have.studied labor and manufac- ( iurlng conditions in many countries of , the world, held the close attention of | i he house of representatives for two hours, says a Washington dispatch of < Monday. Representative Wm. C. Red- ( field of Brooklyn, a new Democratic member, a manufacturer of machinery I and long connected with export trade, , declared to the house that American | are abandoning the protective principle as unnecessary as they develop more scientific management of their own plants as now carried out In the more advanced Ameri I can factories. "The protective tariff has simply enabled American manufacturers to sell i at such high prices that they have not studied their own conditions closely," said Mr. Redfleld. "They have relied on government support, rather than j upon close business management. Its J effect has been to stimulate the devel- i opment of plants until they are now so large that products must be sold , abroad. In this condition the manu- ( facturers no longer want to pay the . high prices necessary for material un- | r der a protective tariff." Mr. Redfleld declared that instead | of foreign labor being cheaper, Amer- , ican labor is really the cheapest in the ] world: that from exhaustive personal , investigation in many parts of the | world, he knew that no labor produced f as much product, in proportion to the , " wages it received, as Americans. He said the American laboring man only "wants to be freed from old restrictions and outgrown systems." ? Mexico City. June 10: "If I should be elected president, Senor de la Barra will be minister of foreign relations and Gen. Reyes will be min- i ister of war in my cabinet." Thus sDoke Francisco L. Madero, Jr., today following, a visit to the presidential residence at Chapultepec castle, [ where he talked with both President de la Barra and Gen. Reyes. Both men have consented to accept these portfolios and their decision was announced In an official bulletin Issued at the national palace tonight. "It Is true." said Gen. Reyes, at his home this afternoon, "that I am going to be minister of war If Senor Madero is elected. I am not going to be a can- ? dldate for the presidency or participate in the elections. I know Senor Madero has the support of the people | in Mexico and I am in complete sym- | pathy with his principles. To offer myself as a candidate might mean a confusion which would produce anarchy. and I can assure you both President de la Barra, Senor Madero and myself will work earnestly and Incessantly to prevent such a contingency." f : = AT THE CHURCHES.
