Towill was Indicted aloni with several other former dispensar; officials, the specific transaction oi which this action Is based being th purchase of a large quantity of liquo labels. ? Coluu.bia Record, Tuesday: Solic itor George Bell Timmerman, who wa in the city Tuesday, brought with hir a report on the Paul Williams murde case. Mr. Timmerman recommend that George Nichols, the white mai who was convicted with three negroe for the killing of young Williams on i circus train, last October, be not par doned or paroled by Gov. Blease. Th Paul Williams murder case is vividl; recalled here and in Lexington coun ty. where the trial itself was held Williams was a very young man am in company with a friend boarded th train of Hagenback-Wallace circu going toward Augusta after the per formance here. In the early hours o the morning the body of Paul Wll liams was thrown from the train am at the time of the finding of the bod; the murder was a mystery. Weekly the companion of Paul Williams brough the first story to Columbia o the killing. Weekly told how the mei came to the flat car where he an< Williams were and took their valua hies, then shooting Williams. Weekl; escaped from the train by hiding am getting off at a station further on u] the road. Solicitor Timmerman sue ceeded in convicting four men for th< murder of Williams. One of the mei was white, the George Nichols fo whom a pardon is now being sough on the ground of ill health and no having taken part in the actual kill ing. George Nichols' attorney, Mr. G C. Cunningham of Pekin, 111., was her Tuesday to see the governor, who it oitv Thi? u'ar the secon< WUl v* vnv v.v.? . w appearance of Mr. Cunningham at tl?< governor's office with the pardon pe tition. It is stated that a large par of the residents of Pekin have signe< the petition. Speaking informally o the case Tuesday, Solicitor Timmer man told some interesting things ii connection with the murder of Pau Williams. As discovered by him th four men charged with the murde had at first agreed to "stand together and hold out that none was guiltj Later on three of them fixed a plar it is stated, by which one man wa to have the blame fastened on hinr When this one of the quartette foum this out he resigned from the ranks o the merger and then each of the mei charged went to telling on the othen shifting the blame. Two were triei and convicted and the jury recom mended them to the mercy of th court. This unexpected verdict (witl the recommendation) led to the agree ment that the other two prisoner plead guilty, which was done, puttin{ them all on the same footing. Thus a! four men were sentenced to life im prisonment. Attorney Cunninghar appeared today to get a hearing in th matter, but as the governor was awa: the petition comes up later. Smith Gets the Place.?Presiden Taft on Wednesday announced the ap polntment of Henry A. M. Smith o Charleston, as district judge of Sout! Carolina. Mr. Smith is a Democrat and it has been given out that the ap polntment was made on the recom mendation of Senator Smith, of thi state. Judge Smith will succeed Judg Brawley, who retired recently on at taining his 70th birthday. He is abou 57 years of age, a lawyer of grea learning and ability and has practice law for over 35 years, according to ; statement given out at the Whit House. The new Judge comes of splendid family, is a man of the mos exemplary personal character and i closely associated with the best c the history of South Carolina. "Hi circumstances are such that the emol uments of office have no attraction fc him," says the statement, "but at th suggestion of the president he has con sented to accept the appointment." ui* Anninut Us.?If th United State* were to impose an ex port duty on cotton and arrange t have the government finance the hold In" of cotton for any price American might name, what would the rest c the world do? How would German fare if the United States were to im pose an export tax on cotton after th manner Germany has discriminate against American farmers by means c its potash tax? These are questions which student of finance and economics are consid erlng with great care. Brazil and Ger many have used Just such a weapo on the United States with indifferenc to protest from this country. All th coffee product from Brazil, which I more than half the coffee crop of th world. At present Brazil buys but llttl from the United States. Most of th manufactured products required b Brazil are purchased In Europe, a the United States has little opportu nlty to adopt retaliatory measures i the case of the South American re public. Americans must have Bra zilian coffee, and this government i helpless, apparently, to resent th coffee trust arranged by the Brazil ian syndicate unless it prosecute th agents of the trust who handle th business in this country.
