ORCHARD RUBBI8H. Now Is Time It Should Bs Burned, Says State Entomologist. Just at this season of the year, those orchardists who have not already done so, should make a careful inspection of the premises, removing and burning all dead and dying wood. It is In Just such places that many of our most Injurious orchard pests pass the winter. And besides, such rubbish serves as an ideal breeding ground for many of these insects. It will only be a few days now before most of these insects will have left their places of protection to begin their work of destruction upon the budding orchards, then It will be too late for action. It is extremely important that some action in the matter be taken Immediately. There are many orchards in the state infested with San Jose scale that have been pruned and badly infested material left lying in the orchard. This mis take should be corrected, because such infested material is a menace to the rest of the orchard and to the whole community in which it is found, being a constant scource of Infection. Then there are those trees that are \ heavily infested with the Shot-Hole Borer, recognized by the small round holes in the bark, resembling those made by No. 8 shot and usually a general unhealthy condition of the tree. This insect passes the winter as a small white grub in its burrow in the dead tree, emerging in spring as a small brownish beetle. Trees are often completely girdled by this insect, causing them to die in the course of a few week. Besides the two just mentioned, there are numerous other insects that inhabit dead wood and rubbish lying around the orchard. No one will attempt to deny the fact that by destroying all prunings. dead branches and trees, apd other rubbish about the orchard the coming gener atlon of insect pests will be considerably decreased, rendering control more practical and certain. It is therefore to the advantage ol every individual owning an orchard whether it be one o? commercial importance or merely for home consumption, to put forth every effort tc get the orchard as free as possible from dead or dying wood before the pests emerge from their winter quarters. Don't put this matter oft until tomorrow or some time next week, noi pile the prunings just outside the orchard. but destroy them completelj by burning and do this immediately W. A. Thomas, State Entomologist. Democrats Arc Split on Tariff.? At the opening of the extra session o: congress the Democrats are dividec when the tariff bill reaches them as t< the best policy to pursue. They are ? unit on the geenral principles that th< tariff should be based on the demand! of tjie government for revenue rathe: than protection and apparently if thi Democrats themselves were In the ma jority and were framing a bill it wouh be upon this basis. Some of them believe in proceedin) upon this theory*, even though the Re publicans frame the bill. Others, com ing from states in which there ar large industries which have hereto fore been the subject of protection take the view that as the bill will under any circumstances, be a protec tlve measure, it Is In the line or tnei duty to their constituents to exer themselves to obtain the best protec tion possible in the new measure. Senator Simmons of North Carolim is among the southern Democrats whi take the position that southern prod ucts should be properly taken care o in a protective bill, and he will devot special attention to the lumber sched ule. which he apprehends will be vig orously attacked in the efforts to ge new legislation.
