he only sought what had been accorded to every other officer who had held ^ the position?a second term. If there ^ happened to be any voter in this section who did not know Col. Boyd, all the colonel asked was that they apply to officers of the First regiment, and he was willing to stand by whatever tht*se officers might say. He was perfectly willing to leave his fortunes with them. * The audience had begun to disperse with the conclusion of Mr. Blease's speech, and the last half dozen speeches were heard only by a few dozen individuals Gen. Boyd was the last speaker on the list and when he concluded, the chairman adjourned the meeting r LOCAL LACONICS. We Will bend I he tnquirer From this date to January 1st, 1909. for 82 cents. Blease In Fort Mill. Hon. Cole L. Blease spoke In Fort Mill last Saturday at the invitation of a number of his supporters. Mr. B. L. C'aughman, candidate for railroad conimlssloner. was also along and made a * speech. Praise For First Regiment. The Chattanooga (Tenn.) Star has the following complimentary memtion of the First S. C. Kegt.. now in camp at Chlckamauga: No militia V regiment which has ever visited Chlckamauga has come In for a larger share of favorable comment from soldiers and citizens alike than the South Carolina soldiers now encamped on the hillside In front of the headquarters of Gen. Potts. There is not a tough looking soldier to be seen In the olive drab of the regiment. The men seem to have been selected, not taken because they wanted to have a * trip at government expense and pitched into any sort of misfit clothing to comply with the laws, as is the case In many regiments. The clothing seems to fit the men who wear it In a way to indicate that the men have been in the service at least long ^ enough to know how to wear their garb. They also seem to have enough clothing to keep them clean, and there is no slouching around* with coats unbuttoned and awry. In their camp and out of it military courtesy is observed with a punctiliousness that bespeaks discipline of the sort that counts. "When all the regiments of militia-have reached the proflclen* cy that the First South Carolina displays." said a veteran of the regulars, "the government can begin to look on the state organizations as a pan ui that first line of defense about which General Bell spoke so eloquently at ^ your Chattanooga banquet the other evening." Co. "L" Is coming in for Its share of the general praise. The men are all In fine trim and enjoying themselves. The company will probably reach home some time Sunday. SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. ? Judge D. Ask to be Shown It Is a generally accepted fact that even after the experience which the public has passed through during the past few years in the matter of life insurance developments (details are not necessary) that the average man buys life insurance from an agent instead of the company he is selling insurance for. and takes his word as to the guarantees, the provisions of the policy and the company's record, losing sight of the fact that the company is only responsible to the extent of the contract It Issues. I have been making the unqualified statement in these columns for the past nine years that the Mu4. 1 Tl -fli T I /1/s rv# XT^n.r, XT lutll Dfllflll L#IIC 1113. v^u,, ui Iicnain, 11. I have always been able to prove this when asked to do so, and am today. Don't you think that before accepting a policy from any other company, regardless of claims of agents, it is to your interest to ask to be shown wherein the Mutual Benefit excells all [others?
