GATHERING AT DENVER. 9 Messrs. Gray and Johnson Will Fight Until a Showdown. Denvel, Col., July 1.?Claiming a victory on the flf-st ballot, but overlooking no possible chance to make their triumphs complete, the followers of Mr. Bryan have been watching for any move on the part of his rivals ^ that would compel him to go single handed against the field, as Taft was obliged to show his strength in the early stages of the Chicago convention against the combined forces of the "allies." The arrival today, however, of the personal representatives of Judge ^ Gray and Governor Johnson, the only candidates who are now expected to enter the race against Bryan, has failed to disclose any common ground of agreement uriwecu men. The Gray managers asserted that they had no Intention of entering into a coalition with the followers of Governor Johnson, and had not re^ ceived from them, or made to them any overtures for a combination. The same disclaimer of a desire to pool issues was made by the Johnson people, Vt' after their arrival today. They said that they had no other object in view hut the nomination of Governor Johnson and intended to make their fight for that purpose only. This attitude, which the Gray and Johnson people have assumed, has led * to considerable conjecture of a vice presidential character. The followers of Mr. Bryan professed to believe that the refusal of the Gray and the Johnson men to make a combined j fight against the strength of Mr. Bryan means that they are not averse to occupying positions in which they can avail themselves of Bryan votes for second place in the event of his nomination for the presidency. On this * point, however, both Mr. Lynch for Governor Johnson and Mr. Marvel for Judge Gray, insist that the Bryan people are utterly in the wrong. Their men, they say, are out for the first place and are giving no consideration to the vice presidency. * Samuel Alschuler, who is the probable member of the committee on resolutions from Illinois, declared today that he did not believe that an antiinjunction plank to be adopted at the convention would be of such character that any controversy would be provoked by It. "There has been talk of a 'radical* plank in the platform," said Mr. Al^ schuler, "and all sorts of meanings have been grouped under that word. It all depends upon what is meant by the word 'radical.' I think it is entirely safe to say although I am now giving my personal opinion only, that ^ any assumption that the anti-injunc tion plank will be an attack upon the courts is Incorrect. It unquestionably will favor jury trials for contempt and due notice to all parties so concerned in Injunction proceedings. It can safely be stated also that the plank will be a clean-cut, definite statement, and not a straddle such as the Republican party has made. It is entirely within bounds to say that the injunction plank to be adopted by the Democratic national convention will be no more advanced than the views which % have from time to time been expressed by President Roosevelt. In fact it is my opinion that we will be more conservative than the president would have been if he could have written the plank into the Republican platform." A When asked about the vice presidential situation Mr. Alschuler declared that in his opinion the great desirable attribute for any candidate was that he shculd be from Illinois. If, however, that state decided to pre - - ? Ko Bent any name 10 me cuuveuuuu was utterly at a loss to predict at this time who the Illinois delegation will favor. The state, he said, would stand for Bryan to the finish and there would be no break In Its vote at any time. Roger C. Sullivan, national committeeman from Illinois, tonight announcc ed that his state might have a candidate for the vice presidency in John Mitchell. Mr. Sullivan said that Mitchell would not be declared a candidate unless he was willing to make the race for the nomination. If he will be a candidate he will have the solid backing of Illinois, which will make a strong fight for him. The matter will be determined after Mitchell's arrival on Monday. ? William Johnson, a negro boy, aged about 13 years, had a fist fight with Reroy Sellers, an 18-year-old white boy, in Charleston, Monday, striking Sellers behind the ear with his fist, from the effects of which the latter died. ? The cotton mills, banks and other corporations of Spartanburg, paid out about $350,000 in dividends, Tuesday. All the cotton mills of the county enjoyed a prosperous year, notwithstanding the depression in the yarn and cloth markets. AT THE CHURCHES. BAPTIST. Rev. I. G. Murray, Pastor.
