I will be away from Yorkville for an indefinite time, and during my absence my office will be closed. A. Y. Cartwright, D. D. S. SOME REASONS For Collecting In Advance Telephone Exchange Rentals. To the Public: To collect in advance telephone exchange rentals is no new departure. Rents are so collected by all telephone companies and have been for many years. This is one of the last compa^ nies to adopt this rule. This company has about 2,500 subscribers, one or two hundred of whom move or go out of business every month and leave the company to hold the bag. These people cannot be found, and if located cannot be collected from. The object is to try to stop this monthly loss. The state laws require indiscrimination and equity towards its patrons by a corporation. Therefore, to collect In advance from one man, we must collect in advance from all. The person who intends to pay does not object to lend his assistance to make those enjoying like benefits as he, pay for them. The telephone company is not going out of business within thirty days. If it should, or if It fails to o-ixro imn the service Daid for, it will o**v ^ ?? 4 refund your money. You pay in advance for life insurance. You pay in advance for railroad fares. You pay in advance for newspapers and magazines. You pay in advance for theatre and bali games. You pay in advance for bread tickets, ice tickets, street car tickets, mileage coupons, and many other things jl very similar to telephone service, and which are hard to collect after the service is rendered. How many fares could a railway conductor collect at the end of his run? Or a gatekeeper after the baseball game is over? Or a life or fire insur_ ance company after the year has ex pired or the policy has lapsed? We wish to thank our subscribers for the loyal manner in which they have helped us by paying their bills in advance. Ninety per cent have paid us in every town. We had a few at each place to refuse to pay until they understood thoroughly the cause of the change. Then these also came manfully to our rescue, for which we are grateful. We are glad to say that on account of not being able to collect in advance, we had to take out or discon? tinue only a very small percentage of telephones. We are organized to serve you; it is our pleasure to do so. By being able to collect from our patrons, cutting out loss, we feel we can give you better service in the future. We are at work all the time building new lines ** and making improvements for the benefit of our patrons, and we charge a reasonable compensation for it. making only a reasonable, conservative return upon the money invested in our business.
