ROCK HILL AND VICINITY. Killed By Lightning?Best Amateur Baseball Team?Personal and Other Matters.' <VuT?n?ondence of the Yorkville (inquirer Rock Hu.u June 20.?Wednesday afternoon about 5 o'clock, at the beginning of a slight thunder storm, Sam Anderson, the bright seventeen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Anderson, was struck by lightning anl instantly killed. At the time he was assisting the workmen, who were building his father's new residence, which is nearby the present home ot the family. All of the workmen ex cept one had gone down from the sec- | ond story as the roof had not been put on. Young Anderson was standing near the corner of the house and nailing on the studding. The bolt struck him on the left temple and followed that side into the shoe tearing his clothing* and setting it on fire. The workman with him was knocked down and severely, but not seriously shocked by the bolt. Mr. George B. Anderson, the father, who Is a well known insurance man, was not at home, but was reached by wire and arrived home Thursday morning early. The funeral was postponed until FViday in order that Mr. David Anderson, the eldest brother of the deceased young man, who lives in Birmingham, might reach here. The deceased was a young man of many good qualities and was just home from his first year at the University of South Carolina. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and in addition to being a favorite in his home was very popular with the neighbors, and especially the children ?a true Index. A scaffold fell Wednesday afternoon with a number of workmen engaged in remodelling the residence of Rev. T. B. Craig in Oakland and some of them were pretty badly bruised. No serious injury was done, however. A number of those Phlladelphians connected _wlth the company, which owns the Water, Lagnt ana rower company of this city, Florence and D&rllngton were In Rock Hill Thursday and talked matters over with representatives of the city council again. So far nothing has been definitely settled as to the water situation. It is very bad. The present holders of the franchise have expressed themselves as willing to sell out to a local company at a fair valuation. There is absolutely no doubt that Rock Hill has the best amateur baseball team in the state. They are bonaflde Rock Hill men, most of them students home from college, and they are playing ball for the fun there Is in it. Mr. Crawford Witherspoon is the very efficient and hustling manager. So far the team has played the following games and won all of them: With Charlotte Highland Park team, score 5 to 2; with Fbrt Mill. 4 to 1; with Blacksburg, 8 to 5 and 7 to 1; Concord, 2 to 1 in ten inning game. The old brick building on Railroad avenue near Main, for twenty years or more used as the fire engine house, has been torn down and removed. The bell tower too is to be taken away and a sidewalk made along the railroad right of way. Miss Margaret Poag, the attractive and accomplished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Poag of this city, is to be married Tuesday morning, the 25th to Mr. R. M. Swofford of Gaffney. The marriage will take place at the bride's home in Black street, and they will leave immediately after for a northern ahr* Pair W P Tlnri/>ar? nf St .Tnhn's M. E. church will officiate. Dr. J. R. Miller and Mrs. Miller, Dr. J. E. Massey, Jr., and Miss Janle Massey have returned from a trip to Atlantic City, Philadelphia and other points. Mr. M. H. Sandifer, who is a member of the state board of Pharmaceutical examiners is at Charleston attending a meeting of the board. Mr. B. F. Kee of Lando, a graduate in pharmacy, is now upon the staff of the Rock Hill Drug company. Rev. R. C. McRoy of Texas, is visiting his mother, Mrs. Lizzie McRoy in Oakland. ? Columbia, June 20: The Jury in the second graft case against ex-Supervisor Owens after being out all night, reported a mistrial this morning. In this case Owens was charged with official misconduct and negligence. Three other cases are pending against Owens, but whether any of these will be tried at this term will not be decided till this afternoon. The jury stood six for acquittal and six for conviction. The explanation for this condition is simple: The. company is 62 years old; the guiding star of the management has always been conservativeness, economy, a faithful discharge of its sacred trust, and above all a square deal to every policy holder?to give each one all to which he was entitled. An experience of 62 years has enabled the management to fully understand what can safely be guaranteed to each member for each dollar he pays and that is what is being done today and has always been done by this company?Look before you leap.
