ROCK HILL HAPPENINGS. Fire Damages J. M. Cherry's Residence ?Good Baseball Game?No Telephone Franchise Yet?National Union Bank Changes?Personal and Other Notes. Corresiwndence of the Yorkrille Knaulrer. Rock Hilu June 13.?Thursday morning at about 11 o'clock, the handsome residence of Mr. J. M. Cherry, in Oakland avenue, was discovered to be on tire. The fire was in the paper between the storm sheeting and the weather boarding, and made it hard to locate, the whole building seeming to be ready to burst into flames and yet no particular blaze in sight to work on. The firemen responded promptly and the fire was after a hard fight subdued. Every bit of the furniture was carried out; but. of course was damaged, the whole house was flooded with water and the walls and car pets very badly damaged, rne uamage will be In the neighborhood of 15,000. The house and contents were insured. Dr. James P. Kinard of the chair of English in Winthrop college, has been chosen to teach English grammar at the "Summer School of the South," which convenes in Nashville, Tenn., June 28th and continues six weeks. Mr. T. Scott Mason, who has successfully conducted the Rock Hill steam laundry for several years past, has sold his business to Mr. W. C. Watts of Charlotte, who has been in the laundry business in that city for twelve years. The Rock Hill "fans" got together a mighty good aggregation of players Thursday afternoon and although they had never played together as a team before, they gave Charlotte's crack Highland Park No. 3 team a good drubbing to the tune of 5 to 2. The score would not indicate it, but the game was a good one. Rock Hill scored two runs in the first inning, after that nobody got to second base until the last of the fifth, then the visitors got tnelr two runs, the locals getting their other runs in a bunch. Only one man on the team was not a resident of Rock Hill. The special meeting of the city coun ell Wednesday mgni muai iu a?uc the matter of granting: the asked for franchise to the Rock Hill Telephone company. The matter is now in the hands of a committee to confer with the telephone coihpany and the city attorney and report back to council. Mr. John A. Jenkins, a Yorkville man, who has been teaching in the Lancaster schools for several years has been elected to a position in the National Union bank, and will begin his duties July 1st. Mr. A. M. Haddon of Virginia, is also a new addition to the bank's force. Mr. Geo. H. Blakely will also take a position with them in a short time. Mr. Geo. Beach is also with this bank during his vacation from college. Mr. R. L. Goff and Mr. Knox Roach have resigned their position, Mr. Roach to take one with the Victoria Cotton mill. Mr. C. Lee Diehl, who has been In bad health for some time, has sold his Interest in the Acme Suspender factory to his partner, Mr. C. W. Frew, and has gone to Baltimore for treatment. Mr. W. F. Ryerson of Newark, N. J., visited here this week, the gruest of an army comrade, Mr. A. F. Ruff. Mr. Ryerson. who is a northern man was at the beginning of the Confederate war living here and enlisted in the First S. C. cavalry. This is his first visit here in thirty-two years. Mrs. Charles L. Van Noppen and children of Greensboro, N. C., are visiting Mrs. Thos. L. Johnston. Mrs. Johnston will be at home Friday afternoon to a number of her married friends and in the evening will entertain the young people in honor of her Miuo Mnricp Johnson, who has Just returned home from Miss Stewart's private school in Washington. D. C. Miss Adelaide Magill of Mexico and Miss Jessie Epps of Due West, are visiting Miss Marion Roddey. Joxes Pubads GtJ3L.tr.?Franc H. Jones, the defaulting assistant cashier of the Charlotte National bank, was arraigned in the Federal court in that city yesterday morning and entered a plea of guilty to the several counts of the indictment charging him with "embezzlement, abstraction and misapplication" of the banks funds. No sentence was imposed by the court, judgment being deferred until after the case against Fonvllle, the alleged accomplice of Jones, is disposed of, which will come up next Monday. It Is now authoritatively stated that the shortage at the bank is more than $80,000. Jones on yesterday restored $5,000 to the bank. The maximum penalty on conviction of "embezzlement, abstraction and misapplication" is ten years imprisonment. In view of the fact that Jones gave himself up, pleaded guilty and restored $5,000 of the bank's money, it is probable that he will not be given the full penalty. AT THE CHURCHES.
