General Order No. 17. I I. The commander of the army of ] northern Virginia department, cheerfully conceding to the wishes of the commander-in-chief and of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, has abstained from appointing a sponsor or maid of honor for the reunion of 1907. But it gives him the greatest j satisfaction to announce to the com- i rudes of the department that Mrs. Jackson?the widow of the Immortal f General Stonewall Jackson; Mrs. Mahone?the widow of the gallant General William Mahone, and Mrs. Lucy Lee Hill Macgill?the daughter of the ; heroic and beloved General A. P. Hill; ( all indissolubly associated with the fame and glory of the army of north- r ft em Virginia, have most graciously consented to ride at the head of the department of the army of northern Virginia on the occasion of the parade ] at Richmortd on June 3rd, when a loy- j al people will unveil a monument to 1 and show their affection for their great 1 leader. Harrison Watts, assistant i adjutant general, is charged with the duty of seeing that every attention is ? bestowed upon these noble women, whom we all cherish and honor, and will personally escort them in tne pa- t rade x c III. Individual deposits, subject h k to check, $17,813,000. Saving depos- " its $12,611,000. This shows an in- n crease of three quarters of a million b dollars. Capitol stock paid in $8,449,- c 000. Columbia special of May 2 to 1c Charlotte Observer: Another murder mystery with no clue to work on has n the city and county authorities worried and suburban residents partic^ ularly disturbed. While on his way n to his meat market on Taylor street from his residence in Waverly, Mr. R. ci T. Wescott was shot through the head and instantly killed as he passed be- ei tween two schoolhouses at the corner ri T or baay ana uan ouecis ??? ??o?5??j at 5 o'clock this morning. Mr. Wescott had- Just left his residence two blocks away down Oak street, but his body was not found till half an hour V1 later, when his sixteen-year-old son p stumbled over the corpse. Mr. Wes- s< cott was lying on his back with his feet toward Lady street, in which di- u rection he was headed. His revolver, w * which it was his custom to carry in si his hand to protect his money which he carried In a shot sack between his t. residence and his store was found ly- t< ing by his side. There were only two k loaded shells in It, and these appear- ^ ^ ed to be faulty, but he told his wife is last night that he was out of cart- S" ridges and the only two in his revolver might not fire. He said he would get new ones today. There are a doz- a en houses within 200 yards of the point, but nobody has been found who ^ heard any shooting. The assassin's a bullet entered Mr. Wescott's left tern- ? pie just above the ear, ranged upward p v and came out above the right ear, the murderer evidently knowing Mr. Wes- 3; cott's habits and laying in wait for him at the corner of the schoolhouse. Mr. Wescott's shot sack was found in ~ his left hip pocket with 60 cents left I in it, and a handsome diamond ring I was missing from his finger. He gen' erally carried *20 to $30 in the shot bag, but it is not known how much he carried this morning. The coroner's jury went to the scene this morning. - but in the absence of any evidence ad- J journed until to-morrow. The killing c! is a complete mystery. They do not * V seem to be able to get even a start ^ * toward a solution. The well-trained li bloodhounds from the penitentiary were put to work as promptly as possible. but by that time hundreds of I people had tramped over the ground, f. and the dogs would do no continued S1 trailing at all. In view of the recent ^ Marshall-Green killing in another su- e burb, when both the highwaymen and ej the murderer were killed after a desperate encounter, and on account of about fifty hold-ups and several mys- _ terious murders that have occurred in j and around the city in the course of c a year or so. the feeling is itensified. The county and city authorities seem equally powerless to cope with the r situation. V suspect was arrested this g afternoon in the person of a white man y named Jim Gardner, but so far there c; is no evidence worth while against him. He was arrested on a warrant signed by Jesse Thomas, father-in-law j, of the dead man, who says Gardner f has made a contradictory statement _ about how the news reached him. Gardner held up Constable Lorick in Waverly a few months ago. When he .. looked at the business end of the con- s stable's revolver he apologized and n said he was only joking. Sheriff Coleman says Wescott's revolver was freshly shot and he thinks the facts so far obtained as strongly support _ the suicide theory as they do the mur- 1 tier thenrv ^ J **" n ? According to the weather bureau j tr records, the month just closed was the c coldest April in the last twenty-six s years and within a degree of the coldest April ever experienced. The month was characterized by a succession of ^ cold spells which swept southeast0 ward over the northeast Rocky Moun- 1 tain slope and gradually spread south- r ward and eastward over the entire country east of the Rocky Mountains. ^ The cold was almost continuous ex- n cept for brief intervals of a day or j so of warmer weather, and it closes r with remarkably low temperatures in t the interior valleys and the south- . west. ? r Sailors Assacltbd.?A conflict at Santiago last Tuesday between the sailors of the cruiser Tacoma and Po- : lice Captain Lay and a squadron of 1 police resulted in the wounding of ten sailors by the machettes and the fatal L snouting ui auuiiicr. mi aic ? hospital of the cruiser. c The sailors were returning to the f ship from a banquet in charge of an , ensign, when the latter claims the po- j lice made a vicious assault with x machettcs and pistols against the de- y fenseless men. Previous to the year 1905, the expression was common that "aill life Insurance companies are about the same." It was used alike by laymen and agents of practically every company except the Mutual Benefit. The laymen believed It to be true because the agents had told them so. The agents knew it was not, but in order to keep the people fooled they must, when they came In competition with the Mutual Benefit, make the assertion in order to keep the prospect from looking before he leaped. Since the Armstrong Committee lifted the lid in New York in 1905 the laymen have learned that "all life companies are not about the same" and that the Mutual Benefit is the only one that could and did stand every test that could be applied, and prove by its record that it was in a class by itself and did and had always given each and every member a square deal under all circumstances. No better proof of these assertions, it seems, could be offered than the fact that in 1906 its agents wrote more business than during any year of the 62 it had been in business, while almost all of the "Just about the same" companies wrote from 10 to 75 per cent. less.
