Homicide In Gastdnia.?I,ee J. Cudd, aged twenty-five, was shot and killed at the Avon mill this afternoon by his father-in-law, Jos. B. McGathey. It seems that there had been bad blood between Cudd and McGathey for some time, on account of the relations existing between Cudd and his wife before their marriage. Cudd and Addle Matilda McGathey were married three weeks ago by Rev. J. A. Hoyle, but for several years prior to this time the two had lived together as man and wife. Cudd and Tom Pressley, who lived in the same house with him, received a shipment of Christmas booze this morning, and were preparing for a good time. Both Cudd and Pressley had been to McGathey's house, and given him a drink or two, and had returned home and gone to bed, when McGathey came and inquired for Cudd. When told that Cudd was In bed he went to Cudd's room and pulled him out of bed, and the two went down stairs together, and after some words McGathey went home and returned with a shot gun. Cudd met him at the door and both fired. Cudd using a revolver. The shot from the gun took effect In Cudd's right breast, causing instant death. McGathey returned to his home, where, a few minutes later, he was taken In custody by Policeman Wiley Carroll and lodged In the city jail. A preliminary hearing will be given McGathey tomorrow.?Gastonta special of Wednesday to Charlotte Observer. Gain In Postal Receipts.?A reduction of more than $4,000,000, or 27.83 per cent in the excess of expenditures over receipts of the postofflce department Is shown In the annual report of Edwin C. Madden, third assistant post master general, wnicn was nmue public yesterday. The total postal revenue for the fiscal year of 1906 shows an Increase of more than J15.000.000 over that of 1906, the greatest Increase in one year In the history of the postal service. Tl\e total receipts from all sources were 1167,932.782; and the total expenditures J178.449.778. The gross deficit Including losses by burglar)' and fire and through uncollected debts amounted to 810,542,941. An enormous Increase in the demand for stamp supplies?nearly 800,000,000 stamps, amounting to a gain of more than 10 per cent over the previous year?"is a striking indication of the wonderful growth of postal business due to the country's great prosperity." Considerable space is devoted in th report to a consideration of second- ' class mail matter. After discussing the work of the congressional commission appointed -to consider the question of second-class matter and remove all present restrictions, he urges that what is needed Is an "up-to-date, workable law?a law which can be , enforced; a law the terms and limitations of which will be plain to publishers, to postmasters and to the department" Mr. Madden says he is "convinced ^ that an Increase In the rate of postage would ultimately prove beneficial I to all and would not work disastrously as represented." As Is pretty generally understood It Is the rule of The Enquirer to discontinue all subscribers at the expiration of the time paid for. The reason for this rule hardly needs explanation. It is business. After we have sent the paper during the period specified in the subscription price we have filled our part of the contract, and we do not ( feel warranted in assuming the right , to try to bind the subscribers into a new contract without his consent. * And that is not all. It is a violation of the postal law to continue sending a paper to a subscriber after the expiration of his subscription period, and for violation of this law the publisher is liable to lose his second class postal privilege. Already quite a large per cent of the subscriptions which expire in January next have been renewed through clubmakers and otherwise. There are quite a number of others that have not | been renewed. Of these there are some no doubt who do not want the paper another year. Their subscriptions will be stopped promptly upon expiration. There are others who do not desire to miss an issue, and for the benefit of these we gives below a list of club^ makers who have either already commenced sending in names for next year, or who will do so on the request of the subscriber: J.
