INCREASE IN TAXABLE VALUES When the county board of equal Ization, which adjourned last Frida: to allow the Loan and Savings Banl people time In which to add up th total number of acres returned ii the various townships, and find th average value per acre at which lan< has been returned, met again yester day morning, it received from Mi S. M. McNeel a statement giving th desired information as follows: Ag. A\ - Township Acres Val. Val Rethel 3R 576 *209.465 15 4: Bethesda 55,107 322,900 5 8 Broad River.. 32,913 170.295 5 1 Blks. Creek.. 52,137 220,660 4 2 Catawba 51.476 344,205 6 6 Ebenezer? .... 34,313 232,445 6 7' Fort Mill 33,125 191,390 5 T King's Mt. .. 55,758 255.620 4 51 York 44,490 257.090 5 7' 397,895 12 203,970 $5 5' The foregoing statement was re duced from data procured from th< auditor, that official having furnish ed the board with a complete list o all the land returned In the regulai manner, together with the price pei acre at which it was assessed by th< owners or respective townshij boards. The bank people got theli aggregates by adding up the various values as given. The average valu< of the land per acre in each township is found by dividing the aggregate value by the number of acres. The figures of this year having been ascertained, the next interesting Inquiry that presents Itself is hou these figures compare with those ol last year. This inquiry was first attempted with reference to the acreagt and the result was as follows: Township 1905 1906 Dec Bethel 43.448 38,576 4,871 Bethesda 58,406 65,107 3.29J Broad River 37,401 32.913 4,48f Blks. Creek 58,612 52,137 6.37S Catawba 53,638 51 476 2.165 Ebenezer 38,405 34,313 4,091 Fort Mill 34,064 33,125 93S King's Mt 58.063 65,758 2,29? York 44,016 44,490 474 Total 425.943 397.895 27.34S The greatest surprise In the foregoing figures is probably in the facl that every township except York shows a loss in acreage this year as compared with last year and York shows a slight gain. This situatior is accounted for in various ways. Ir the first place the data from which the statement is made includes onlj property that . was returned in th? regular manner, and leaves out a lot of property that will hereafter b< put on the books in red ink undei the head of additionals. This, it is thought, will account for most ol the shortage. Then again it has beer customary for many property owners within the outskirts of Incorporated towns to return their acreag* as country property. Much of this has this year been put on the book: as town lots. Again, lands along th( '* York township line but lying wlthir this township have frequently beer returned in adjoining townships tt avoid the C. C. & C. railroad tax Some of this land has been brough back into York. Along with it all however, there is no doubt a good deal of land that Is dodging outright and will never get on the books tc bear its Just proportion of the burdens of government unless the township assessors make a special effor to brine it in. But* In spite of a decrease of something like 27,000 acres,-Jpnm the aggregate of last year, the following comparative figures show an increase In the valuation of the land ol each towrrshlp except Bullock's Creel which has fallen off nearly $5,000 Here are the figures: Township 1905 1906 Inc. Bethel ...$ 202 025 $ 209,465 $ 7.44C Bethesda . 279,080 322,900 43,820 Brd. Riv. 159 735 170,295 10.560 Blks. Crk. 225,480 220,560 *4.92( Catawba . 262,925 344,205 81.281 Ebenezer 196,240 232,445 36,20! Fort Mill 173,730 191,390 17,66< K'g*s Mt, 224.880 255,620 30.741 York 221.855 257 090 35.23! Total $1,945,950 $2,203,970 $258,020 Decrease. Mr. McNeel did not undertake t< foot up the value of all the towr property in the various townships because he was not asked to do It and the task involved rather mori work than one cared to undertake merely as a matter of curiosity; bui the board especially desired to know the aggregate value of town real estate In Catawba and York townships and this Mr. McNeel ascertained The figures this year as comparei with last year, together with the Increase In each township are as fol lows: 'rownsnip isuo i?u? ?uw. Catawba .. $630,930 $755,890 $114.96( York 266 523 314.750 48.22: Still another Item of comparatlvt Interest Is the average value of land per acre by townships this year ant last year. Taking Mr. McNeel's figures a*s given above and Auditoi Hunter's figures as prepared for lasi year, the difference may be seen a: follows: Towirship 1905 190( Bethel $4 62 $5 4S Bethesda 4 63 5 8? Broad River 4 28 5 li Bullock's Creek 3 92 4 2! Catawba 4 91 6 6! Ebenezer 5 39 67" Fort Mill 5 10 5 71 King's Mountain .... 3 86 4 5! York 5 03 5 7' While, of course, from what ha: already been said, it will be understood that these figures, especlallj for this year, are not absolutely ac curate, and cannot be made absolutely accurate before next July oi August, still they are within a fev cents of the real averages, and ar< quite close enough for all practica purposes. LOCAL LACONICS. The Pension Appropriation. News and Courier: Comptroller G -n eral Jones has issued a call for the fma meeting of the state board of pensioi commissioners, to be held here oi Wednesday, the 25th instant. He hope to have the pension money in the hand of the pensioners fully ten days soon er than in previous years. The pen sion rolls are found to be in bette shape than usual but it is largely 01 account of the carelessness of th county boards In not complyl ig wltl the rules that are fully set forth tha there must be delay. In many In stances the counties do the work fine ly. but one county cannot be paid uii til the entire list Is complete. OBITUARY. Died?At Sharon, on Wednesday, o pleurisy and pneumonia. Pa, painted 24 Rolling-Mill houses one f coat Devoe at a saving of 11 per cent for paint (lead-and-oil was after the Job). That's how the tale reads. We infer what really happened. The buyer, as usual, went by the cost of paint; got bids. Lead-and-oil bid low and guessed the quantity low; the saving was only 11 per cent. Nobody seems to have thought of this: the painting costs two or three times as jnuch as the paint. How much did we save on the painting? T Don't know. The tale ends with this: We often D refer inquiries to those houses, for g wear of Devoe. I That's a good-enough story; but nobody knows what it is. Our only difficulty is want of paint-intelligence. _ Yours truly 70 F W Devoe & Co P. S. J. J. KELLER & CO., sell our PAINT. LOST. X'nts. in Company II ANDREW CARNEGIE Is quoted as having said: "Put all your eggs in one basket and then watch that basket." The annual statement of death losses paid by the Mutual Ban*fit makes It clear that there are a very large number of men who have adopted the plan of putting all their insurance eggs In this company. Upwards of 150 of its members who died last year held two or more policies. Jonathan Brown, of Salem, Mass., for instance, had SEVEN policies In the company on his life. The first was taken out in 1865, the second in 1888, the third and fourth In 1892, the fifth in 1895, the sixth in 1897 and the last in 1899. Frederick O. Robinson, of Lexington, Mass., had 8IX aggregating 925,000, the first taken in 1867 and the last In 1897. Men could not well endorse the company in higher terms than these two. There are members in this section who have from two to four policies taken out at different times. The only conclusion to be drawn is that they are entirely satisfied with the company's management and the results of their annual dividend policies. No company has a better satisfied membership than the MUTUAL BENEFIT. 8AM. M. GRI8T, Special Agent. TO DEBTORS AND CREDITORS.
