University of South Carolina Libraries
held next Monday, will take some action on the matter of voting the South Carolina dispensary system out of Greenville county. Already the question has been considered informally. It was discussed yesterday, but nothing will be done until next week and In the meantime all of the ministers will be approached with a request that they Join In the movement for prohibition. It is practically certain, however, that the vote at the Ministerial Union will be unanimous, in which event plans will be set on foot Immediately to secure the necessary number of signatures from qualified electors so that an election can be ordered. The vote in Pickens county ten days ago by which the dispensary was crushed by the people has created a great deal of talk In Greenville and many of the business people are right In line with the ministers in the desire to crush the rum shop here. According to all reports the sentiment in Spartanburg is being whipped-around to the prohibition point and it is said that Charleston will soon prepare to go dry. The petition for an election In Union has been turned down, the supervisor claiming that a close examination of the names revealed the fact that all were not bona fide electors. In Greenville the chances are that the citizens will look upon this prohibition matter i > 1? * t.iAn. K?? t fKa rroitj a uuslli puuii. ui lien, uui ?..v feeling against the dispensary is so strong and deep-rooted that the county would be glad to be rid of it at any cost. "I have found." said a minister yesterday, "that the sentiment is greatly in favor of prohibition In this city, and from what I can gather there Is not much love for the machine in the rural districts. If we secure the necessary number of signatures, the question will then be submitted to the people. If they want to retain the system they can say as much, but they will likewise have the right to wipe it out if they feel so disposed. At any rate, we want a vote, and I believe it will mean the end of liquor selling In Greenville county." AT THE CHURCHES. CHURCH OP THE GOOD SHEPHERD. Sunday Services?Sunday school at 4.30 p. m. Several years ago, shortly after I had made my first contract to sell life insurance for the Mutual Benefit a general agent for another old line company. and one that Is recognized In the Insurance world as standing near the bottom of the list so far as favorable results for policy holders are concerned. undertook to Induce me to cancel the contract I had signed and accept one with his company, offering me about twice as large commission as the M. B. I told him that I would not change for the reason that I knew the M. B. was the best policy holder's company in business, and as I expected to sell insurance to my friends and neighbors, I felt that it was my duty, both to myself and them to offer what I knew to be the beet. He replied that while my position was correct theoretically, still he was sure I was doing myself an injustice from a financial standpoint for the reason that his company would pay me twice as large commission, and that so far as the average man who bought insurance, was concerned he bought from the agent Instead of the company and I could sell his insurance as easily as the M. B.. Experience has convinced me that the "average man" does buy from the agent and that If the agent knows his business he can sell the "average man" a policy In a company without a record or standing just as easily as in a company that has stood the test for sixty years, as the M. B. has and has a record as white as snow. I almost Invariably Insure those who realize that the contract is with the company and look before they leap. SAM M. GRIST, Special Agent. J. S.
