/ / w * Conquers Honors a Woman.?The senate and house of representatives on Friday suspended legislative business to do honor to the memory of a woman for the first time in the history of congress. The occasion for this unusual procedure was the formal ac* ceptance by congress of a statue of Frances E. Wlllard, the temperance worker, which was presented by the state of Illinois under the law providing that every state might place statues of two of Its most distinguished citlsens in statuary hall, the old chamber of the house of representatives in the O&pitol. The statue was unveiled in the afternoon In the presence of a great crowd of members of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and Washington school children. Souvenir medals were distributed. At 4 o'clock the house and senate suspended their legislative sessions and held separate exercises in honor of Miss Wiilard's memory to mark the acceptance of the statue. The galleries of both chambers were crowed with spectators, mostly women, i? ?Ka lamnoronPA Tift VP uiicrcoiru ui iuc %vn?pv>M?*vv ....... merit. In the senate, Messrs. Cullom, Beveridge, Dolllver and Hopkir.s delivered addresses/ and in the house Messrs. Foss, Graff and Ralney of Illinois. Llttlefleld of Maine and Itrooks of Colorado spoke. The statue is the work of a woman. Miss Helen Farnsworth Mears of Wisconsin. It represents Miss Willard standing: in an easy position, with| the right hand resting on a reading) desk and the left arm at the side, with ^ the hand holding a manuscript. The statue, which is of Carrara marble, occupies a position next to that of Georgi Washington. On the pedestal is an inscription beginning: "AM. it is women who have given the costliest hostages to fortune." Wht Not??Some of our contemporaries. are disposed to flout the suggestion which appeared in the news columns of an Atlanta newspaper that the Hon. "Hub" Evans, chairman of the state whisky board of control, would be a candidate for governor in 1906, but if the whisky business is to be maintained as the supreme institution in South Carolina affairs, wherein is the suggestion ridiculous? Mr. Evans is at the head of a department that * controls and disburses three times as much money as the state collects in taxes. He is thoroughly in sympathy with the dispensary and the dispensary with him. Beyond question, be is the logical candidate af the dispensary and the dispersary's friends. The whisky question is always the main question in Sout h Carolina* politics. If the dispensary is "the best solution of the whisky question" in whose personality is the solution so truly embodied as in that of the chairman of the board of control ??News and Courier. 1 IB 1 " AT THE CHURCHES. The prospect of being able to prepare large acreage is n^t bright at this time, and with this fac- in view it is to the interest of every farmer to prepare small acreage and use an increased amount of fertilizers to the acreage. By this method the cost of laJbor is reduced, and increased returns from the acreage planted is assured. Some men In buying life Insurance are Influenced more by what the agent says and promises than by the written guarantees and known record of the company he represents, losing sight of the fact that the unconditional guarantees written In the policy when delivered are all that can be demanded. The prospective Insurer loses sight of the fact that buying life Insurance should be treated as any other business proposition and he should investigate the records and contracts and business methods of various companies before "turning his money loose" and If he finds that the agent who "worked him up" is not "in it" when It comes to a "show down," and he will not be unless he represents the Mutual Benefit, and he still feels that it is his duty to help him, the wise thing to do would be to make him a present of $10 rather than accept a contract that he knows at the start is not as liberal and will cost more than in some other company?that of the Mutual Benefit for instance. If I cannot show you that the Mutual Benefit guarantees more for the money than any company doing business in this section, I don't want your business. SAM M. GRIST, Special Agent.. Friends and customers can help themselves, us and the country at large as well by their kind words and patronage. We are always glad of wise suggestions. There is no such thing as standing still. Experience teaches necessities for Improvements in ail business. We have learned by experience that it does not suit some people to give long options, from the fact they are liable to a change of mind if they don't get the property sold when they want it sold. They often see some other trade they can make that would suit them better provided they could sell then. Otherwise they don't want to sell. It has been our custom to not advertise property free of charge unless the owner would allow us at least twelve months' option. We want to place the business in reach of ail.! Therefore we have decided to list and advertise any real estate where the owner is willing to pay a reasonable advertising fee in advance on options of less than twelve months, same to be deducted from our commission when the property is sold. This fee will be regulated by the value of the property and the length of time the option is given. We propose to advertise much more extensively and it is our purpose to givs special service to those who assist us. AH property that is for sale should not only be advertised in the State papers but in the County paper where it lies, different denominational papers, and in the North, South, East and West, which requires unlimited expense and labor. The more people that know property is for sale, the better are the chances to find a buyer. It is always best to represent PROPERTY AND PROPOSITIONS strictly as thsy are so as to gain confidence and make satisfactory business. The world is so accustomed to being deceived by misrepresentations that it is difficult to inspire confidence?the thing we are bound to have in transactions. Deception is fast growing to be a thing of the past in all branches. People are learning by experience that it does not go. Clients describe their own property, name the price and dictate the terms. If we send a customer to look at the property and he finds it different from representations, It disgusts him and makes it difficult to get him and others to spend their time and money going to see other properties. When customers give honest descriptions of their property and name a reasonable business price, we are very . glad to spend our time and money on twelve months or more option free of charge, trying to find a buyer, provided they assist us. with Information and carry out their part of the contract. It is always a waste of effort to attempt to handle unreasonable propositions. The time to do business is when you have an opportunity. We offer the fairest and cheapest proposition in the oountry. There are big advantages to the country at large as well as all Individuals interested when they act their part well In assisting us. Buyers naturally go where they can find what they want. If your property is on our list it will stand equal show with all others. The money we spend in advertising others helps to advertise yours. Therefore list your PROPERTY AND PROPOSITIONS without delay and receive the benefits that will accrue. There are a srreat many who ?eem to stop after asking questions. We must have Propositions to do businesa. Questions are all right to start a trade, but customers should say readily what they are willing to give or take from the fact both buyers and sellers are liable to change their minds as to values.
