P" ; 80UTH CAROLINA NEWS. ? Col. D. K. Norris of Anderson, dle< In a Baltimore hospital last Wednes day. Col. Norris was prominent ii politics for several years and is wel known throughout the state. He wai a trustee of Clemson college. ? Spartanburg special in the Newi and Courier: The cotton condition li most anomalous. It has surprised ex perts as well as farmers. Hundred: of bales are unsold in the county, bui no one seems to be pressed for money Even the farmers who have sold n( cotton are getting on all right. A cotton mill president reports that h< bought cotton for February or Marcl delivery at 8i cents. That trade was made when the drop in price began c He thought it was cheap enough. Th< factor who was to furnish the cottor has written to him, begging off, foi he cannot buy a bale, even at thai price. The cotton factors here ar< booking orders for immediate or future delivery, Just because they hav< no cotton in sight. It is one of the mnst Interesting business DfOblemt that has come up for solution in the south. Bankers, cotton factors, mili presidents and farmers are all working ^ for the same object. They wish tc eliminate the gambling element from the problem, so that the price will b? uniform, or as nearly so as possible, It is a remarkable business condltlor when a mill president insists on the delivery of cotton at 8} cents when the local price is only 6.75, and the seller is unable to deliver the cotton, when the margin is about 88 to 810 a bale in his favor. It begins to look as If the stand which the farmers have taken will revolutionize the methods of the cotton exchange. The farmers of this county seem in earnest about holding what Is on hand. Occasionally one carries his cotton to a mill and has the option of naming the day for payment, the price being the market price of that day. This correspondent saw six or eight bales on the way to a mill this morning on that condition. Thar Is safe for the farmer, but it tends to keep the price down. AN UNKNOWN SAGE Is responsible for the adage that "There Is no way to judge the future except by the past," and the accuracy of the assertion is so patent that any thinking man will admit its truthfulness without argument Sixty years ago, in the city of Newark, N. J., a few level headed, business men obtained a charter to organize a mutual life Insurance company on the "old line" plan. After long deliberation they decided to call it the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co., and that It should be con ducted for the "mutual beneflt" oiaii who became member a . The foundation stone was "conservatlveness and economy." No big salaries to omeers or commissions to agents. Those principles have never been violated, and today the company enjoys the reputation of being the leading policy holder's company In America?one that has always given more in proportion to cost than any other. It Is Just as great an ambition with the management of 1905 to maintain Its reputation as it was that of 4845 to start right Its record is as white as snow and you would be astonished at the liberality of Its contracts, as compared to others, if yo'u would examine them. It is my business to show them. SAM M. GRIST, Special Agent. Lion Coffee * . * 1 ' ; I am rontinninp to sell Lion Coffee at 25 cents for two pounds.
