SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. ? Three negro children were burned to death in a tenant house near Johnston, Edgefield county, on Wednesday. ? There are about sixty race horses of all kinds at the fair. But few of *- these horses, however, have any reputations as racers. ? The daily papers report a large attendance at the State Fair this week. The attendance during the opening days was much larger than it was last I year. ? Edward Brazwell and Thomas Stiles shot each other at Griefs, Spartanburg county on Wednesday, as the result of a falling out about a well In which both were Interested. ^ ?Spartanburg special to News and Courier: Early last spring the First National bank of Spartanburg offered a premium of $100 in gold to the farmer that made the most seed cotton from one acre. The con test ants met ana aaopiea ruies uy which they should be governed. About twenty or more farmers entered the contest. Some of them dropped out soon after. It is probable that the winner may gather 4,500 pounds of cotton. One farmer had weighed 3,000 pounds up to last Saturday . and he had a considerable number of bolls to open. Some good farmers entered this contest and the ^ result "will show what thorough preparation, high manuring and good cultivation will do. There are four or five different varieties of seed tried, so that their merits may be compared. ? Columbia State, Thursday: The representatives of fertilizer mills who were here yesterday seem to be very much pleased with the outlook. It was reported unofficially last night that suits now pending in the courts will be suspended pending definite action by the fertilizer board which is to meet here in November and will then give the mills another hearing. The law requires the fertilizers to have certain definite quantities of chemicals. In some parts of the state the board has found fertilizers which fall below the requirements and the sellers have been made the defendants in legal ac* tlon. The matter was argued before representatives of the board yesterday and the mill managers were told that there would be another meeting of the board. The fertilizer mills disavow any- Intention to sell impure or worthless fertilizers and declare that they want the law enforced, but they argue that the law is imperfect. , AT THE CHtRCHES. Dear Sir: Thomas J. Bannon, druggist, Westerley, R I, says: Westerley painters expect a gallon of paint to cover 19 sets of blinds; Devoe covers 25; there is no such thing as rubbing this out. (The usual reckoning1 is for a gallon to cover 16. We suspect the Westerley people don't wear their paint till It gets very shabby.) Devoe covers more; of course, we know that; we know why too; it's all paint and full-measure. Yours truly ? F W Devoe & Co 21 Annual Flower Show. In the Court House on Tuesday, November 1.
