telegram which brought forth the relief train. The sight at the wreck baffles description. chaos being the best name for it, with its heavy iron girders and steel rails, and heavy timbers twisted and snapped asunder as if it was the work of a man with a box of matches. The wrecker from Abbeville arrived on the scene shortly after 9 o'clock and another came from Monroe, and the two gangs, including 125 men, began work on laying new rails and put" ? - T* that ling up a iresue. a is capc<.?u >u_. by 6 o'clock tomorrow morning by working all night, it will be ready for trains. As soon as Mr. J. H. Hyatt, postmaster at Van Wyck, heard train 41 clear from the village and crash through the trestle, he went after Mr. J. H. Husley, section overseer of the I Seaboard Air Line, and they went to the wreck. Both are emphatic in saying the crash was heard exactly at < 1 o'clock. ' Wrecker Raleigh, pulled by engine 552. was sent for, and it came up from Monroe with seventy-five men. Wrecker 619 from Abbeville, came up with fifty men, and Trainmaster Gore was sent for. When he arrived he took charge of the work. The trestle at this point is about thirty feet high, and over a swamp with a heavy undergrowth, and about 200 feet long. A field force with telegraph instruments located shortly before noon and | orders came thick and fast. It was decided to ditch the wreck and get trains passing as quickly as possible, and afterward remove the wreckage, instead of burning the wood portion of the cars. The mail car was heavily guarded, and some negroes were called on to 1 ,oi"> moii nvop to thp Southern railway to push it through. Mr. Gore, with trembling hands, , pulled away portions of a woman's body from the head of engine No. 654. The portion of the cloth taken away was blue, leading some to think that it was the dress of Mrs. Black, who was dressed in blue. It is the opinion of railroad men that the derailing of both trains was the work of train wreckers, who hoped to gain thereby, as the following of the ' special was not known, and its com- . lng blocked their plans. About 1,500 people viewed the wreck, ten going from Yorkvllle and between 150 and 200 people from Rock Hill. I Coroner Louthian and Sheriff Logan went to the wreck on the 10 a. m. train with a party from Yorkville, and the inquest was in progress when the reporter returned. LOCAL LACONICS. Goat Ranch at King's Mountain. , Charlotte Chronicle, Thursday: Mr. I R. B. Hunter of King's Mountain, who is finding pleasure and profit in com- ] ducting a goat ranch, is in the city, i In response to a question from a Chronicle reporter, he said there were , fully 500 fine, healthy goats on his . ranch, but he will not rest satisfied until this number is trebled or quad rupled. "What are you going to do with so many goats?" asked the reporter. "Sell them, of course," replied Mr. Hunter. "We will butcher them on the ranch and ship them to city markets. We have already had in- 4 quiries from parties in Richmond, Norfolk, Baltimore, Philadelphia and other cities, but as yet we have made no shipments. By next spring we will have at least 200 young goats ready for market." Later Mr. Hunter and his associates may establish a cream- , ery and make cheese from goat's , milk. I ?? 1 AT THE CHlHCHGS.
