ister stoutly maintains his Innocence and declares that the counterfeit was given him by someone'who asked him to change the bill. The figures from a Confederate ten-dollar note are pasted over the numbers on the face of a genuine one-dollar greenback. The moment Karesh looked at the bill when it was handed over by the preacher in payment for some goods he detected the fake. He went out and called in Policeman Miland, who took charge of Smith. At the station house the minister told a straightforward story about how he came by the counterfeit, but he allowed a very damagng statement to slip into the narrative. He said that he was in a crowd when somebody dropped a pocketbook. A young Negro standing near him put his foot on the wallet and stood on it until the loser was lost in the jam. The preacher said he asked the finder where he came in on the deal for not squealing. After a time Smith, so he says, grave the other Ne gro live dollars and took tne counterfeit ten for his part. When asked if he didn't deem it his duty as a minister of the Gospel to warn the loser of his ill luck instead of dividing the spoils with the stranger. Smith appeared confused. AT THE CHURCHES.
