but there are some wells. They are from fifty to seventy feet deep, and the water is pretty good ; but not quite so good as that in a well I know of located out on the north side of the Charlotte road, a short distance beyond Fishing creek. The population of this section is made up of people from all parts of the United States, and the principal business is truck farming. The most important crops that have come under my observation are ' strawberries and celery. It sounds like a small matter, don't it ? _ Well, there is nothing small about it. Some of the farmers realize what our people would consider pretty good size fortunes. One man and two sons here, not long ago, sold an eight acre crop of celery to a Boston man for 824,000. But they are not all doing so well as this. This was an exception. I met Ed Hobbs and Will Bowen at Tampa. Both are doing very well. Mr. Hamel, who came down with us, has not been benefitted by the trip and is | not pleased with this country. He will return to Yorkville shortly. Mrs. Thomasson and our little daughter are in good health, and are delighted. I am also well pleased with the situation and am content to remain for sometime. M. L>. Thomasson. OLIVE LEAVES. An Old Jasper Indulges In Reminiscences of War and Suggests a Monument to Jenkins. Correspondence of the Yorkville Enquirer. Olive, April 9.?The news about Olive is not very exciting. The farmers are pushing their work, everybody is looking for startling developments in politics, and that is about all there is in it. What memories crowd upon the heart and mind of the old soldiers when the 9th of April rolls around each year. It was on the 15th of April when the "Jaspers" left for the war. We were as lively a set of soldiers as ever buckeled on cartridge boxes, and numbered 110 men. There was only one married man among us, and on the 9th of April, just four years after starting out, we turned our sad faces homeward, all that we had fought for and held dear, lost to us forever. As well as I can ascertain, only 20 of the original 110 survive. Thirty-five of the "country boys" of this section joined the company at McConnellsville. Of these only four are now living. They are Captain John D. McConnell, Dr. T. M. Gwin, James S. Gourley, and O. J. Gwin. T n?v?r will forcet what a orreetine we received from the "town boys," as we called them, as the cars rolled into the station at McConnellsville. They grave loud cheers for the "country boysbut how could it be otherwise, officered as the company was by Captain Seabrook, and such lieutenants as Ike Withers. Banks Meacbam and Ned Clinton? And then, in the ranks there were such big hearted lellowB as Joe Witherspoon, Beatty Smith, Jim Adams and others. They took us in as brothers, angl that relationship existed during the whole war. I was glad to see the tribute General Longstreet paid to General Jenkins. That noble man was an ideal soldier, and how proud York county ought to be of him. He should have a monument in the court house yard. o. J. o. MERE-MENTION. The State of Ohio has adopted the electric chair system of executing criminals. Esther, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland, has the measles. Congress has heretofore been allowing indefinite amounts tor the use of contesting congressional candidates in establishing their claims to seats. Columbia Register: The new dispensary law forbids the importation into the State of liquors which have not been examined by the State chem ist. But the new dispensary law permits importations nrnvided thev are of liauors 'I r'"*"*? '??r ? ---? pronounced by the State chemist to be chemically pure. It is a question whether Judge SimontoD would hold a seizure of liquor not declared chemically pure by the State chemist as violative of the interstate commerce law and in conflict with his former decision under the old dispensary law. The State does not propose to remain long in ignorance as to how Judge Simonton will regard such seizures. Arrangements are now being made to get a test case before him and have him rule on the new phase of the important question presented by the latest dispensary law. ?
