WAIFS FROM WARREN'S. Delusion of a Pious Neighbor? Light Frosts?Death 1 of Mrs. Anderson?Epidemic of Chills- Cp on the Bible. Correspondence of the Yorkvlile Enquirer. Warren's, October 15.?One of our neigh-, bors piously believes that the Lord is sending so much rain to keep us from getting our cottou out and on the market until the price will go up. There were several frosts last week ; but ! they were too light to do any damage. Fully one-third of the Blackjack corn crop ' is more or less damaged. The sweet potato crop is fine. Mrs. G. A. Anderson, whose illness we j mentioned last week, died last Monday morning, the 8th. The deceased was a member of Antioch M. K. church, and has a host! of relatives and friends in this community. Her infant daughters were taken care of by i her mother, Mrs. Percival; but one of them, so early bereft of its mother, has crossed the irtin xi v i;i iv jviu tivi ? Mr. H. C. Warliek's family are all sick ? two with typhoid fever and the rest with chills. We, after having three in succession, are led, from our feeling, to believe that chills must have been what ailed the bewitched during the lime of the famous Salem witchcraft troubles. During a potraeted meeting at a certain church in this country, after listening to a lengthy sermon, during which the minister made frequent allusions to the early life of Moses, we came out of the church before services were concluded and overheard the following conversation between two strangers. Says one: "I never knew before that the Bible told who Moses parents was. "Oh yes," replied the other, "it tells who his daddy and mammy was, where he was born and everything, lie was born in a boss trough." POINTS FROM PINEVILLK. Business Getting Better?Personal?Steel Creek Presbyterians Call Rev. Mr. Itrhlges. Correspondence of the \orkvllle Enquirer. Pineville, N. C., October 15.?Pineville is improving some. Two new firms have commenced business recently. Miss Beulah Younts, our orgunist, has been quite sick. She is now getting better. Chills and fever are prevailing to some ex tent; but we have no serious cases. Mr. Waller Garrison is on the streets this afternoon. He has heen quite ill with typhoid fever. The long distance telephone is in operation here. Mr. J. M. Nevins today answered a call from Richmond. Rev. Mr. Bonner, of the M. E. church, is conducting a series of meetings. Mr. T. V. Boyd expects to move back into the Big Steel Creek neighborhood. It is on account of the health of his wife, who has been quite unwell for some time. , Steel Creek Presbyterian church has extended a unauimouscall to Rev. Mr. Bridges, of Yirgina. Mr. Bridges has been conducting u meeting at the church, and it is thought that he will accept. Commuuion was held at Steel Creek A. R. P. church last Sunday. Rev. R. G. Miller, of Sardis, did the preaching. Miss Mary Gilson died on Friday, the oth. and was buried at Fort Mill. xxx LETTER FROM UNION COUNTY. Gin Honse Destroyed?'Possum Hunting In YorkOnly Slight Damage on the River. Correspondence of the Yorkville Enquirer. Etta Jane, October 13.?On Thursday morning last, the gin house of Mr. C. W. Whisonant, of Wilkinsville, was destroyed by tire. There was, 1 learn, about 11 bales of cotton burned, together with the entire outfit. The fire is, so far as I can learn, considered accidental. Mr. Whisonant had as a partner in the ginning business , Mr. P. S. Wilbur. The loss of these worthy men is severe, they having just equipped themselves at considerable trouble and expense for the business. The fall, so far, has been unfavorable for gathering crops. Too much rain. One night this week some of our county boys crossed the river and took a 'possum hunt on the York side. They caught four large, fat'possums. The storm of last Thursday didn't amount to Paco'lfr Wrs'cfKWI'fgW "tn^?tfh/i\!>\ig.I^"A How any but the lowest lands, and consequently the damage done was slight. Much anxiety existed with the farmers along these streams until the waters began to subside. Sigma. SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. To Oppose Stanyame Wilson. ? The Republican convention of the Fourth district met in Spartanburg last \\ e<inesday, and unanimously nominated Lawson IJ. Melton* of Columbia, as a candidate for congress to oppose Stanyarne Wilson. Will Take a Now Start. ? The Slate hoard of control has decided to restore to good standing all towns in the State, except Greenville, that have been deprived of their portion of the dispensary proli.s on account of failure to assist iu en-j forcing the law. The various towns will be given their share of the profits until it develops that ih^y are no longer trying to en-: force the law. Will e<> up to tlie t'. S. Supreme Court. ?Messrs. The papers iu the easel have not yet been completed; hut Ihe un-1 derslandiug is that they will he forthcoming j iu a few days. As the result of full consideration of the report of the court of inquiry appointed to investigate the refusal to obey orders by a number of companies of the State militia during the Darlington affair, Governor Till-i man, on last Wednesday, issued orders sus- j pending General T. A. Huguenin and all the | staff officers of the Fourth brigade. Also the I captains of the following named companies : J German Fusileers, German Artillery. Montgomery Guards, Gordon Volunteers, Irish Volunteers, Gordon Light Infantry, Palmetto Guards, Catawba Rifles, Sumter Guards, Governor's Guards, Carolina Rifles, Jenkins Rifles and the Columbia Zouaves. Captains J. K. Alston, of the Richland Volunteers; Edward Anderson, of the Carolina Rillcs, I and J. E. Cogswell, of the Washington Light j Infantry, are not suspended. It is further ordered that the non-commissioned officers and men composing the above companies are forbidden to exercise any of the functions of militiamen until further orders from the commander-in-chief. I>r. Sarali C. Allen. ? Columbia correspondence of The News and Courier, Wednesday: Dr. Sarah C. Al-j len, daughter of Mr. James Allen, of Charles-; ton, came out first in the State medical ex-' umination today. Dr. Allen began her medical studies here at the Collhge for Women, I completing the preparatory course in modi- j cine under Drs. Tailey and Howe, who had charge of the medical department of the College for woman. She then contiuued her studies at the Women's college of New York, from which she was graduated with the degree of M. I>., last June. Miss Allen left in the afternoon for Baltimore to take a post-graduate course in medicine in John Hopkins; university, where she expects to remain until next June, when she will have completed a live years' continuous course in medicine, an accomplishment which can scarcely he claimed hy another of the profession in the State. It is gratifying to know that it was entirely due to the medical department in Dr . Atkinson's college that Miss Allen had her attention turned to the study of medicine. DoM Konohassaid that "economy is t ho science O of avoiding nnneeessjirv expenses," and I iness that is about the correct definition. Is the fanner who, instead of taking two mules and a 'i?i*liiii 1 lisk Harrow and nnttiner in six to eitrill icres <>1" wheat or oats in a day, puts them in with i single foot plow ami one mnlo at the ratoof not ivcroneacre a day, economizing? Now, honestly, is lie? Is saving time on the farm worth anylliing? It is to men engaged in other businesses, mil why not to the farmer? Another point; if lie an, in addition to doing liveor six times as much work with the harrow as with the plow, do a great deal HKTTKK work, and as a result make better erops,1s that not eeonomy also? (If course he harrow costs money, and so does a ton of guano, as some doubtless realize about now. The harrow will pay for itself every year if used id years. The guano will probably pay for itself Die year it is bought, ami that's the end of it. Next year you will have to buy another. See? You will find that thorough preparation of the I mil before planting any crop is worth more to the crop than all the cultivation you can give it nfler it is planted. I am only giving the experience of successful farmers, as told to me. I'll re are some things you can allbrd to do without on your farm ; but here are two things that you cannot : A ( eniiine t'orbin I>isk Marrow mil nt.cuuiuc Oliver Chilled Plow. Itoth of these machines are very useful and economical. The corn shelters will shell and clean I'io bushels of corn in 10 hours. The feed cuttcrsare first-class, strong and durable mil have two knives.
