Thanksgiving Day?'The Boy was not Afraid of Ghosts?Still no Flat at Howell's?Other Notes. Correspondence of the Yorkville Enquirer. Etta Jane, December 2.?Mr. William Byers died last Wednesday, after a long and painful illness. His disease was pronounced consumption. He was a nephew of Mr. D. - T. Bj'ers, and of the late Edward (J. Byers, of the Hickory Grove section. He was bureil at Skull Shoals, on Thursday. The announcement of Dr. Ross's death in Tiie Enquirer last week, although looked for and expected, spread universal gloom over the countenances of his friends and acnniiintnm'ds in this countv. He needs not history's pages, The poet's praise he'll scorn ; Through all succeeding ages, His deeds will him adorn. Thanksgiving day was observed by the Saletn Sabbath school last Thursday. The main feature of the exercises was the reading of a paper written for the occasion by a member of the school on the subject: "Shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?" Miss Ettie Strain is visiting at l'acolet mills, where she expects to procure a number of subscribers for The Enquirer, One night last week, Sam Lee told Johnnie Foster, a l(5-year-old boy, that if he would go into Salem graveyard and stay there half an hour by himself, he would give him $">. John went and stayed twenty minutes, when Sam called him away. I think Sam should pay him up. John is a York county boy. He's got the grit in him. There has been nothing done yet in the way of putting in a tlat at Howell's ferry. Mr. Garner, who had the contract for building it, has backed out. The cotton picking season is about over with, and the crop is much shorter that was expected. I am told that work has been resumed on the Lock hart. Shoals factory. Editor ok The Yorkville Enquirer : Will you please allow me to say through the columns of your valuable paper, that the little brown cow has a young calf, and that the two white pigs in the pen back of the smoke house, will weigh about three hundred each ? Also, in the pen, by the chicken house, there are some pigs that are too big for the little boys to handle, while down at the lot gate the Jerseys hold the fort. I have lots of hog feed this time. It is about the only kind of corn I gathered. Oh, that fearful storm of August 28! I don't think old Gracey and Johnnie will gabble and quack over the good home-raised corn this winter, as they did last. However, the clover patches are looking fine just now, and if the cold is not too severe, they will stand the winter all right. Things are pretty quiet down here now since all those folks left for better times in the West. If they all find gold mines out there, look out for next fall. We are all going. So nothing more just now, except you will please send me a copy of your next week's paper, as I am anxious to see how what I have written looks like in print. I have subscribed for the Yorkville Enquirer twice in the last month, and have got no; paper except a sample copy. O, hello! j That's a fact. I didn't pay the mouey. Well, I don't blame you. An impression is abroad in the community that there will he a gre?t reduction in rates immediately on the completion of the waterworks, j and tlint it will be wise not to insure until the new rates go into effect. Such a plan would be 1 a good one if those who own property could -j have any assurance that their possessions would * not bedestroyed in the meantime; but they have not. It affords him an absolutely safe means of investing his savings and a guarantee that those depending on his earnings will be amply provided for at his demise. Under the Tontine policy of the Equitable Life he is also provided with a safeguard against misfortunebesides receiving a much larger amount of insurance for the same amount of premiums paid in. It is better than the savings bank, better than the building association, better than government bonds. Better for the wage earner, 01 for anyone, than any other method ever originated. [The poor wife gives way to her feelings and fell to weeping.] "Come now, Annie Laurie," said her husband, regretfully, "I did not shave oil' my moustache with any desire to humiliate your vanity, my lear; but just as you were leaving the house for Latimer's Itazaar, you remember, I was lighting \ cigar. A few seconds later my attention and idiniration was attracted by the passing of a lithe, queenly looking woman, and as you had | just gone liglithearted from me on your happy mission, I thought I could steal one unobserved glance at this attractive, lovely little?" "Oh, Will, you tickle, deceitful wretch," remarked his wife, vehemently, stamping her laintly little foot, which was comfortably encased in a Heed's shoe. "Yoil have vowed to me time tnd again that you would not look at Miss May Hcc Lovehcronco again, and here it is that 1 can't trust you out of my sight. 1 half wish I was dead, and that I hadn't listened to your deceitful words of?" "Oh, come my dear, you wouldn't let me finish my explanation of how my moustache got burned ; but if you will resign yourself to composure, I will tell you in less time than it took to burn it. As I was about to say just now, when my eye caught this 'attractive little woman,' I "held a lighted match in one hand and a half lighted cigar in the other, and as I started to the window to get a better view of this little creature, [his wife frowns but remains composed] I fell over that footstool and the match burned half my moustache oil' clean up to my face, and in an instant I was on my feet again, looking at this 'attractive woman', [unobserved frown] and my darling, she proved to be you! Yes, my Annie Laurie, and as I looked again, I wished I had given you titty dollars. However, there arc quite a uuiuber of clever preachers now-a-days. Come, Annie Laurie, and show me what you bought; my moustache will grow out all right again. . As the jealous frowns vanished, and the color of unbounded confidence began to assume control of her lovely disposition, she, with childlike simplicity on a Christmas morning, began in a ringing, melodious, svrcnical voice, perfectly satisfied with what she had bought and thoroughly carried away with what slut had seen, and this is what she said : "Oh, Will, when I first went into the Bazaar, all the attaches wen* busy, but tlicy all seemed to be hurrying through to wait on inc. Shortly Mr. Latimer came and said that he was ready to serve me. I stated that I wished to look at liis cloaks, to which department 1 was immediately shown, and I found them to be too lovely for anything, well most anything, but I bought one! Then t went to the dress goods department, where I was almost palayzed with bewildering astonishment; this department is simply irresitible. Of course I bought a dress. Next I descended the stairs to the dress-making department in charge of Miss Shires, who was so kind and courteous and assisted me to decide what was wanted, with as much interest as if it were being made for her. It will be several days before I can get the dress, so 1 did not order the hat, but willdotliat when I go to have the dress lilted. I came up slairson the way to the street, and lo, and behold! Mr. Latimer was opening up a case of Heed's shoes for ladies. And, Will, they looked as if they were just from fairyland, so perfect, so symmetrical and so beautiful. f)h! they are just perfectly lovely, and they have tlieni in ten styles! They are too nice for anything?but I bought a pair. 1 half wish that short dresses were fashionable, but I guess I can catch it up out of the dust anyhow. Will, my dear, when I goto have Mrs. Fenticlly fix my hat, won't you give ine the money to buy another pair before they are all gone? If you will, I won't refer to that 'attractive woman' or the fate of your moustache again. Now, won't you do it?" "Yes, pet, T will give you money to buy four pairs if you want them. Mr. Latimer seems to bo invincible." Ostriches put their heads in the sand, and so (they think) escape approaching evil.
