LETTER FROM CLOVER. Recent Kntertainiuentn? The New Associate Re- , formed Church Uedirated?Sermon at the Baptist Church?Other Notes. Correspondence of the Yorkville Enquirer. Clover, May 29.?Clover has been visited in the past few weeks by several "machines" for gathering up and carrying off the niekles | and dimes of our people. First was a sleight i; of hand exhibition. Then came a plirenolo-1, gist. He gave a few free lectures at night,! and employed the balance of his time in s feeling heads and telling wonderful things cf ' character and disposition. It was said that j. he could feel the head and tell all about the j. liver. At any rate, he caused a great deal i of amusement, and that gave satisfaction. i The next was the "Blind Bugler" of the j Virginia Troop, C. S. A. He also gave an | entertainment and got a portion of the i niekles. I feel constrained to say that his 1 share was worthily bestowed. Next was Teet's "enormous" circus, Indian show, etc. This was largely attend- ) ed in the afternoon, and still more largely . attended at night. It furnished satisfactory amusement. Our people are very fond of i amusement, and it is well. It is good to laugh. It is said to be healthy and I believe it, for I think it is the origin of that homely old adage, "laugh and grow fat." The A. R. Presbyterian church here is completed, and has been occupied two or three times. It is a neat, comfortable building. The first sermon preached in it was by j Dr. E. E. Boyce, of Gastonia, N. C. This ; was the proper thing, as Dr. Boyce is so I well and favorably known by this and the entire surrounding country. The dedication services were held on Wednesday night, the j 24th instant. Rev. J. S. Moffatt, of Chester, ] preached the dedication sermon, ana ?ev. K. M. Stevenson, of Betkauy, led the dedica- J tory prayer. A large congregation was pres- < ent. Immediately after the dedicatory ser- * vices were completed, a commission of the * First presbytery, consisting of Rev. R. * M. Stevenson, and Elders W. D. Leslie and ' J. B. Plexico, proceeded to organize the church in proper form. By certificate, twenty names were enrolled. Of these, Mr. Zimri Carroll and Mr. Z. M. Neil, having been formerly ordained as ruling elders, were elected to the office of ruling elders in this 1 church. Dr. E. W. Pressly was elected an 1 elder. The following board of deacons was 1 elected : Samuel V. Wallace, W. B. Stroup 1 and A. M. Wallace. Clover now has three regularly organized white churches, and one or two colored, with two or three more just outside the incor- ( porate limits in shouting distance. 1 The first sermon in the new Baptist church 1 was preached yesterday by Rev. W. J. Lang- 1 ston, of Yorkville. This building is not quite [ completed, but is sufficiently so for all practical purposes. With so many church privileges and gospel sermons by Godly men as 1 we are enjoying, Clover ought to make great 1 progress in matters of religion and piety. 1 Whooping cough has been raging here for ( sometime, but with few exceptions, it is in a 1 mild form. A skating rink has been organized here. Base ball is about to drop out, and the f young people are turning their attention to 2 skating. This, we think, is better, as it ( keeps them in the shade and furnishes them f equally as many bruises. 1 The "Whittling club" has resumed opera- * tions, but has not done much yet. It scarce- ! ly has enough money to keep up a supply of whittling timber. Josh. , t , ( fliim.n notes. ] 1 Condition^ of the Crop*?Death uf J. It. Hafthcr? ( Drowned In Broad River?Fell from a Tree. Correspondence of The Yorkville Enquirer. Gould, May 29.?A much needed rain fell in this neighborhood last night and^this morning. Cotton generally has been chopped out or j hoed, and though there has been some com- t plaint of bad stands on red lands, since the j rain there is reason to believe that every- thing will be all right. The corn crop is also in good condition j and is growing nicely, though it is somewhat irregular in size, caused from the rava gesof the bud worm. j Some of the earliest varieties of wheat ( have begun to ripen and will be ready to f harvest in a few days. The wheat is short ; in straw, but the heads are well filled and i the grains sound and plump. i Oats that were sown last fall are a very poor stand, and do not promise more than half a crop, but those sown since Febuarv, will be fine. Mr. Johu R. Hafner, who lived on Mr. H. F. Hortou's place, died on last Saturday of paralysis, after a sickness of about 12 hours. Mr. Hafner was a native of Cleveland county, N. C., and was aged about 54 years. He leaves a wife and four children, the youngest being about two years of age. A young man named Smith, about 15 years of age, was drowned on the lGth instant, while attempting to swim across Broad river at Lockhart shoals. ? Mr. J. E. Good, whose illness I mentioned 1 some time ago, is thought to be nearing his a end, and will perhaps not live until to- 0 morrow. j An eight year old son of Mrs. James Brannon, who lives on Mr. R. C. Thomson's v place, had a narrow escape from death re- a cently. He attempted to climb a poplar t tree for the purpose of getting some blooms, \ but fell to the ground on a rock, a distance of about twelve ?feet. When picked up a his collar bone was broken, and he was unconscious. It was several days before he ?j recovered his speech, but he is now thought to be in a fair way to recover. H. t' KOl'K HILL HAPPENINGS. c t Closing Exercises of the High School?New Music - Teacher Elected?Personal and Other Notes. Correspondence of the Yorkville Enquirer. e Rock Hill, May 30.?The first session of j the Presbyterian High school will close on the f night of June 1, under very successful aus- c pices. The baccalaureate sermon was preached last Sunday morning in the school auditorium by Rev. W. M. Grier, D. D., of Krskiue college. The churches were closed and the whole town turned out. At 8.15 p. m., the same day, Rev. Henry Smith, D. D., of Greensboro, X. C., delivered a fine address * to the Young Men's Christian Association. On Wednesday, May 31st, at 8 p. m., speeches will be delivered by ten of the students of the High school. Hon. I). H. Henderson, | of Aiken, will deliver the annual oration on ' j Thursday morning, and in the evening there j ( will be speeches from ten more students, i The programme throughout is interspersed with music by home talent. This closes a pleasant and prosperous year. ; At a meeting of the board of trustees of the Rock Hill Graded schools, held last (' Thursday, MissNeilson, ofKnoxville, Tenn., |, was elected music teacher to lill the place resigned by Miss Julia Richardson. Miss] Xeilson will arrive in time to take charge of;; her department at the opening of the next." session. L The most enjoyable aflair of the week, and |' one in which a number of representatives j of Rock Hill's society participated, was the i annual picnic given by Mr. K. R. Springs, at; the old Springs' homstead, three miles north of Fort Mill, complimentary to Miss Raid- ' win, of Alabama. 1 Mrs. Scaife and Miss Scaife, of Spartan- * burg, are visiting Mrs. II. ('. James Josiah Moore was born January 7, 1813, ,nd died May 13, 1893. He was ordained and ustalled an elder of Bethesda church in 1852, nd for forty-one years served his church in that apacity. His devotion to his church was the liaracteristic feature of his life. For years he ed her music. He was never absent from her i ourts, except when detained by circumstances . chick he could not control. His faithfulness s a church officer in visiting and praying with he sick and the distressed, is gratefully rem emicred by many whom he has lcll behind him. On May 14, 189.1, the session of Bethesda j dopted the following resolutions: Resolved, 1. That in the departure of Jas. fosiah Moore, we recognize the hand of our I rather, and bow in submission to His holy will, i 2.
