Humorous Department. NO ANGELS IN THEIRS. Early last summer a New Englander moved out to a small town in Arizona and announced his intention of opening up a first-class grocery. He had a number of bills posted up dwelling particularly on the fact that the business was to be square and above board. Just as he was getting ready to open shop a deputation of citizens waited on him and asked the newcomer if the statements on the placards were made in good faith. "You mought as well give us the hull truth about this thing," said the leader. "You mean to say there hain't going to be no water in the vinegar?" "That's what I mean, sir!" replied the stranger a little surprised, "isor no sana i in the 9ugar!" "Ain't they goin' to be no beans in the coffee!" "Most decidedly not, sir !" "Nor chicory, nuther?" "Never, gentlemen; I give you my word for it." The crowd seemed nonplussed for a moment, and the leader held a short consultation, at the end of which he turned and said: "Say, stranger, we've concluded that you air a suspecious character. But first let me ask you if your cigars are goin' to be loaded?with cabbage, you know?" "Not while I"? "That's all we want to kuow. We gin you twenty-four hours to leave town, an' you better leave. When we're in need o' angels we'll drop you a postal card, Good day, stranger," and the deputation filed out.?[American Grocer. Willing to Pay for Good Advice. When D. K. Tenney was admitted to the J bar, says the Milwaukee Wisconsin, he was one of the "boys." He enjoyed a good time as well as any one, and many good stories are told about him. It is said that on one occasion he went to a country dance near Madison, and became smitten with one of the country girls. He danced with ; her nearly all the evening, regardless of the fact that a certain six-footer in the ! room kept watching him threateningly. ! Finally a friend approached. "Dan," he said, "do you see that big fellow on the other side of the room ?" "Yes." "Well, he's going to lick the life out of you." "Whatfor?"asked Tenney "You've been danceing with his girl all the evening." "I didn't know it. What shall I do ?" "Well, if I were you I'd put on my coat and make a sneak for home. "What are you doing?" asked the friend. "Take it." "I don't want any money." "Take it," repeated Tenney. "I've ta-j ken five dollars for a blamed sight worse advice than than that." Subjugated.?The word subjugated is of Latin origin? subjugutn, under the yoke. Although oftenest used in a figurative sense, it might have been applied in all literalness to a certain Maine boy whose singular experiment with a calf, as described by the Lewiston Journal, may recall to our readers the recently published story of "Bub and Broad." This farmer lad had always taken a special interest in oxen, and delighted to brandish the goad-stick over his father's orMvl.nnt.nrpH nnir. His oreat ambition was to own for himself a pair of steers. Last summer he became the proud possessor of half a pair ; iD other words his father gave him a young calf. Of course the steer could not be yoked up by itself. What did the youthful Cincinnatus do, therefore, but place one end of the yoke round his own neck, and fasten it there. The result may be imagined. The other half of the team started, and pretty soon a passing neighbor heard a shrill outcry: "Stop us, Mr. Smith, stop us! We're running away!" The neighbor came to the rescue, and was attempting to unyoke the boy, when he called out: " 'Tother one, Mr. Smith, 'tother one! I'll stand !" It Bothered Her.?The Rev. Dr. Chamberlain, of Brooklyn, told a laughable story in the course of his address before the Evangelical alliance. He said that a little Brooklyn girl returned home from Sunday-school in a sad state of mind because she had heard there that Jesus was a Jew. She appealed to her mother for a confirmations of the report. "Yes, my dear, Jesus was a Jew," said her mother. "Well, mamma, he was the Son of God, was he not?" "Yes, my dear." "Well," said the little one, "I don't see how it ever happened that Jesus was a Jew, when God himself is a Presbyte rian."?[Boston Advertiser. W3r Our postmaster, Colonel Hardeman, having to employ a charwoman about the new United States postoffice, singled out a colored lady, and offered her the place. She declined it, for the reason that there was too much work for twenty dollars per month. "What!" said the colonel. "You could not make the half of it at anything else. Why, at the North, a woman will scrub the floor all day through the month for ten dollars." "Yes," answered the lady of color; "but dem Yankees is raised to work, and we isn't."?[Macon, Ga., Telegraph. "You must push matters a little, James," said the druggist to the new boy; "by calling a customer's attention to this article and that article and you often effect sales." "Yes, sir," responded the new hnv : and then he hastened to wait upon an elderly female who wanted a stamp. "Anything else, mum?" inquired the ambitious boy, politely; "hair dye, cosmetic, face powder, rheumatic drops, belladonna, mole destroyer?" The elderly lady deals over the way now. BST There is an old conundrum to the following effect: "Why is a dog's tail like an old man?" "Because it is firm." Mrs. Barnum, however, one day offered a different explanation : "O anybody can see that in a moment. A dog's tail is like an old man because it is on its last legs." It was the same lady who once innocently remarked that her hens were so old that they could not lay fresh eggs.
