A QUEER KENTUCKY SNAKE STORY. rjlHE eiFort, by certain parties, to poison the public mind in regard to the quality of our goods has been systematic, but without success. Iu almost every instance, the customer is on his own judgment in buying an article, whether it be in front of a Racket Store counter or , ! -4 .. the regular old line.counter. But we have no hard words for any of our competitors. We simply intend to run our own business and perform the mission devolved upon us! We dislike very much to correct little whifs of poisonous slander as they are given out to us by the "little bird" as it flies homeward to its humble roost. Knowing, however, the momentous speed at which slander travels, we try in our feeble manner to set the poisoned minds aright. Harvey said: "Slander, that worst of poisons, ever finds An easy entrance to ignoble minds." The latest thing that we have heard was to the effect that we were getting scared of the Racket Store business, and that we were going to close out, and quit the business ! Whew ! For what reason these stories are rife, we are unable to say; but as to the scared part of the story we will try to explain our position by a little incident which happened in Kentucky many years before we adopted old South Carolina as our home. Here is the story: A picnic was giyen to the little boys and girls of our home neighborhood, in Kentucky, fifteen years ago, and was largely attended by both sexes. We had the pleasure of attending. After the crowd had assembled and the little boys and girls had nearly all paired and strolled offinto the woods to find a fallen tree, or a few species of wild flowers, etc., we found ourselves sitting on the root of a tree?the assembling point?in charge ot the dinner baskets, wraps, and umbrellas, etc., together with three or four, mischievous little boys. We had enjoyed their company very tmu^i when, all of a sudden, the oldest spied a little wren fly into a decay od knot hole in a tree a short distance off. The knot -tyas twelve or fifteen feet from the ground and he at once determined to capture the little wren. We pleaded with him not to go up to the bird ; that he might fall, etc. He said ho wasn't afraid, and away he climbed until he reached the knot hole. Suddely stopping, his face grew pale, his hair rose on end and the boy dropped to the ground frightened almost to death. Stunned by the fall, he lay unconscious on the ground. We poured several gourds full of water in his face, partly restoring him to consciousness, when he murmured out in a delirious tone to his companions: "If you hoys want to sek a scared snake, just i.ook in that knot hole ui* there !" The above, taken iu connection with the fact that by the time that this advertisement reaches you, the writer and Mr. Thos. C. Duulap will be in New York purchasing our Fall stock, induces us to ask you if you want to see a scared proprietor, just call around by the 1st of September and take a peep at us. We have secured the services of Mr. Wm. M. Allison, who has for the past nine years been associated with the old reliable firm of T. M. Dobson <fe Co. Mr. Allison is a young gentleman of fine business qualities, and not only has he had a thorough and methodical training, but he is backed by long experience. ""re have in stock now a large lot of Fine Sili. Umbrollus. These Goods were bought in a job lot, and we are olloring them at slaughtered prices. The reason why we can sell these goods so cheap is this : We bought a very large quantity at very close figures, for spot cash, and we are giving you the advantage : of our good luck and inside figures. We now have three experienced Dry Goods | Clerks in our employ who know what straight iroods cost, and thev, at the incoming of almost every bill, seem to be amazed at the marvelously low prices at which they are marked. They make such exclamations as "Oh! Mr. Rouss has certainly made a mistake; they are too cheap?mark them up a little in order to be on the safe side." We do not pretend to run that end of the line, but we mark our goods from the bill and at very close figures at that, and they sell themselves.
