Card from B. J. Gold. I am informed that a statement is in circulation in various sections of York county, to the effect that I am a Northern man by birth. This statement is incorrect, as I was born in Clev eland county, N. C. In the year 1875 I purchased a plantation in York county, and in January, 1S76, removed to it, where I have since resided. At the outbreak of the war, when only about sixteen years old, I volunteered in a North Carolina Regiment, which for a short time formed a part of General Maxcy Gregg's brigade, and to which brigade was also attached the 12th Regiment, S. C. V. I was in the Confederate army throughout the war, and was surrendered with Gen. Lee's army at Appomattox. B. J. Gold. JN consideration of the recent rains, we have deemed it advisable to secure a larger store room, and with this in view have rented the room in the "Lindsay Block," two doors north' of the room now occupied by the N -w York Racket Store, whore we expect to carry an enormous stock of everything in our many lines. " * --- V.I! It it is universally uenuvtru ium> guuua ?on bought are half sold." This assertion, however, is misleading, for the reason that you seldom meet a merchant who is willing to compete with his own prices, no difference what advantages ho may baye over his brother behind the counter. Just 011 this point the customer stumbles 011 our "trump card," as it is the policy of the Racket Stores all over the country to soli their goods as low as possible without regard to what they are worth, or what * . p they are sold at by othere^Jffly^these things ovor and act upon them this Fall. When an article costs us two-and-a-half'cents, we do not charge you five cents for it just because you have been accustomed to pay that amount, or because wo think that you don't regard live cents with the distinguished consideration that you should ; but we mark it three cents and let it slide. In plain figures do we mark our goods, and to every one these prices are given. It makes no difference to us what wealth you possess; it makes no difference where you buy goods; it makes 110 difference how humble you may be; it makes no difference whether you want live cent's worth Ui guuus Ui 1U93, yvil <%IV tl caicu tv nu buo 10spectful consideration that you deserve. To go back to the live cents article, you will see that there is a considerable difference between two-and-a-half cents and five cents. No,' that is not the idea; for there is only twoand-a-half cents difference, and that is not much money. The difference of per cent, is what we are trying to explain. Bee if we can do it: Suppose that an article cost us two-anda-half cents and we should dispose of one hundred such articles at two-and-a-half cents each. It is clear to our mind that we would have $2.50 without any per cent, or profit; while on the other hand, if we should sell one hundred of these articles, costing us the same price, at three cents, we would have $3.00 in the aggregate, or a profit of about 20 per cent. Now in the same way we will say that those articles cost two-and-a-half cents, and we add two-anda-half cents to that amount, and if wo pell one \ * hundred of these articles, we Will have as a result $5.00, or a profit of one hundred per cent.! If these little things are not looked into they appear very insignificant, when really they are pyramids. Of course we would find it difficult, at first, to sell goods at cost and make a living, even though we should sell all the merchandise used in the county. But it has been demonstrated to us that it is a splendid idea to divide profits with the customer and trust to luck and the volume of trade for our aggregate profits. While we are sweltering under the depressing heat of this August sun, we will take occasion to say something in regard to the "old grinding credit system" of doing business. York county has few merchants who can sell twentv-fivo or thirty thousand dollars worth of goods on credit without borrowing money. This money will cost ten per cent., and the borrower will have to givo "gilt edge" security, and to this amount add 10 per cent, for freight, etc., which we understand is always done by the old regime of merchants, making a total of twenty per cent, before his goods got in his house. To this add 50 per cent, if the customer wants the goods on time, (and this is not too much if the customer is desperate or doubtful) and you are charged a gross profit of 70 per cent., when we, in cash transactions, would bo glad to realize one-third of that amount! It is impossible to conglomerate tho cash and credit systems of doing business under one roof! Think about these things. Why wo heard, only a short time ago, from a "little bird" that was flying by our store, that a certain business man who does not reside in Canada, had gone to the trouble to "cypher up" our business, and after some hard thought came to the conclusion that at the necessarily low prices at which we had tosdl our goods, and the great expense that was incurred in selling them, it was impossible for us to stand thestorm of the approaching campaign! Suppose the gentleman would liguro on his own business. i We haye no doubt but that his calculation would have been benoticial, both to himself | and to the community at large! With those remarks we will retire for this week. After Friday next you will lind us in our new quarters, two doors south of Lowry it Starr's Drug Store. Ten days later we expect i to be in Now York solectingour Fall and Win, ter goods, and when they are put on our shelves, I marked at a small per cent., we will show soineI body "where uncle Tony hid the wedge!" Tt is not good for toothache, but taken all in ill, it is the most valuable medicine that can be kept in the house. It has often been remarked by observing old people that this medicine is not always attended with as uniformly good results, under same conditions, as formerly. The reason is, that if you are not careful, you are more apt to buy an impure than the pure article. Baker's is a production you can swear by, and it is sold only by MAY <fc MAY. H. F. APICKES.'
