ence Union call on the law to place about saloons such reasonable restrictions as will remove, as far as possible, the evils that spring from them. It demands the enforcement of-those laws for the protection of home. The arrogance of the saloon and the power it wields in political affairs, all for its own interests and against those of society, have awakened a stronger interest in the cause of total abstinence organized on Catholic principles." HOW HE WAS CONVINCED. - Discussion Between a Tradesman Interested in Sewing Machines and a Practical Machinist at the Exposition. , Tradesman.?The Wheeler & Wilson Manufacturing Company have a good practical dis> play here. Machinist.?Yes, their machines are got up . for work, not merely to sell, and they make s specialty of doing practical work to show thai tney are the machines for working people. T.?What is the difference between the WheelAr Wilson and other machines? M.?The Wheeler <fc Wilson is made on e different principle. Having a rotary hook and bobbin instead of a vibrating shuttle, rotary motion in contrast to the stopping and starting motion in shuttle machines. T.?Illustrate what you mean by rotary motion. M.?Well, a jig-saw has the vibrating motion?a circular saw the rotary motion?you know which is the most powerful and capable of the highest rate of speed. Manufacturers using any kind of machinery select those having rotary motion; hence the leading newspapers are printed on rotary presses, some ol them giving 35,000 impressions per hour. T.?How fast may the Wheeler & Wilson machines be run? M.?All the Wheeler <fc Wilson machines have two speeds; the slow speed on No. 8 is faster than the fatest shuttle-machine I know of, and by foot power makes from 500 to GOO stitches per minute. T.?You say foot-power. Are sewing machines driven any other way ? M.?Yes, by steam-power, and at a speed of 1,500 stitches per minute. Some factories use from four to six hundred Wheeler <fc Wilson machines. T.?That is great speed, indeed. How fast may shuttle machires be run? M.?By foot-power at from 250 to 350 stitches per minute, and by steam at from 400 to GOO. T.?This is very interesting, and I would like to know more, as I see there is a great difference in sewing machines. M.?Understanding a great many machines, as I do, I will be glad to give you any information I can. T.?Why should Wheeler & Wilson machines make a more perfect stitch than other machines ? M.?1st. Because they have an automatic under-tension and an independent take up, the latter of which draws the thread while the needle IS out 01 me worK, me same no a muj sewing by hand, and by this means a finer needle and coarser thread can be used than is possible on other machines. T.?What are the wearing parts of shuttlemachines? M.?The shuttle, the heart-motion which drives the needle-bar, and the needle-bar itself, and cog-wheels in cog-wheel machines, such as the Singer. T.?How long will a shuttle last when driven at an ordinary rate of speed in factories where they are working continuously ten hours a day? M.?About three months. T.?How long will the bobbin ? M.?The bobbin is not a wearing part, turning as it does on its own center. T.?You say the heart-motion is the next wearing part on shuttle-machines. How is it ? M.?The very construction of it, steel workingagainst cast-iron, makes it liable to wear. T.?Has the Wheeler it Wilson any parts corresponding to the heart-motion ? M.?No. T.?Why does the needle-bar in shuttle-machines wear out faster than the needle-bar in Wheeler <t Wilson machines ? M.?1st. Because of its shape, being either flat, square or triangular, exposing a greater wearing surface. The Wheeler it Wilson has a round needle-bar, which, being packed in felt (like the piston of a steam-engine), has little friction, and does not wear out. The packing in felt has another advantage, it prevents the oil from running down and soiling the work, which is a vital matter with makers of shirts, collars, cuff's and ladies' underwear. T.?When the machines are hurried, do they do the same quality of work as when run slow ? M.?Shuttle machines When hurried, break needles and make a very uneven stitch. On ; the contrary, the Wheeler it Wilson, from its peculiar construction, cannot vary, doing as tine work at the highest rate of speed as at the lowest. T.?How does the work done on shuttlo-machines compare with that done on the Wheeler and Wilson? M.?There is little comparison, either in qual1 ity or quantity, and, as a result, shuttle-machines are not used in factories, or where quality and quantity are considered an object. T.?\Vhich is the lightest running machine ? M.?The Wheeler <fe Wrilson, by all means, it being recommended by physicians. The shuttle-machines are noisy and heavy-running, and though fixed up with rubbers, etc. (which make little noise at first) these soon woar out and the machine becomes noisy and heavyrunning. T.?It is easy to understand the docision ot the Judges at the World's Fair and in our own local fair in giving the Wheeler <fc WTiJson the highest award when we have the facts before us. I thank you very much for the trouble you have taken with me. I always thought that as long as a machine would sew it was all right, but I perceive there is a very great difference in sewing machines. "Of all the Machines tested the Wheeler A Wilson was the most successful, failing in nothing."?Report from Centennial to the English Government.
