V/ y~ Cotton at Thirteen Cents.?The Greenville correspondent of the News and Courier writes under date of last Thursday: Fifty-one bales of "Allen long staple" cotton were sold by Messrs. Cely Bros., to a New i York firm the other day, for 13 cents a . pound. When the sale was made, middling cotton was quoted in the market here at 9$ cents, which price, was the insult of a "spurt." but which leavesa handsome margin in favor , of the "Allen" cotton. Cely & Bros, have been offered a handsome price for ther stains 1 and tinged cottons of the Allen variety, and 1 they expect to get not less than 12 cents for all they have. ? ? i ? On November 15, 1878, it is claimed, Walton Dwight, a hotel keeper at Bing- ; haraton, N. Y., died leaving insurance poli- 1 cies in several of the best companies to the amount of $105,000. The companies refused to pay the claims against them on the ground that fraud had been practiced. It . was alleged that Dwight was not dead but ; that another body was buried as his, and 1 J * - * * v at ' 112mm iU/\ *vt/\ inat ne was in niamg awaiting uio muucj that he hoped to obtain from the insurance , companies. His wife at once brought suit against the insurance companies and the < case was fought in various Courts until l last Wednesday, when a compromise was 1 effected whereby the insurance companies agreed to pay Mrs. Dwight $18,000. - ?Alexander McArther, who left Winepeg, Manitoba, about a month ago to find the North Pole, has returned. News of the movements of the Esquimaux whom he expected to meet was discouraging. They will not be on Hudson Bay till fall, and as the only other route was that which Col. 1 Gilder found impracticable, he decided to ] abandon the trip for the present. He says 1 he will make another attempt anext fall. _ Col. Gilder, the other Arctic explorer, is ! still at Winepeg. , ? ? > , ? Corporal Bryer and another soldier were < approached by four Mexicans on the Gov- ! ernment reservation at Fort Bingold, on the evening of the 25th ultimo. One Mexican opened fire, shooting Bryner just over the heart. The other soldier hastily retreated. Three Mexicans were arrested next night on suspicion, and the surviving soldier declared himself able to identify the assassins. * tvimnnwo WMWVmfl 4 J JNJBiW ALI V xoi W. E. The disastrous fire at our sister town?Rock Hill?recently, where the investments of so' . many of our friends were burned up, will illustrate the point we wish to make here. When a . fire comes home to us, so to speak, the first ques- { tion asked is, was he or she insured ? If the an- ' swer is in the negative?with a shake of the head, ] we hear something of short sighted business j policy?shouldn't have gone without insurance, : investments ought to be insured against loss, etc. 3 Now the same wise policy that induces you to ! insure against loss by fire, should apply to all 1 vour business transactions. If you paint your ! house and invest in material $50.00, $100.00, or j 8150.00, using so and so's mixed Paints or Blank's Pure White Lead, you are in a "Wild Cat" Companv. IT has been asserted in this advertisement that "The Plow Brand," Raw Bone Guano was ?3.00 per Ton better than Pacific Guano, as shown by analysis of the State Department of Agriculture. To remove any doubt on this point and confirm our position, we will stana by the record. The figures are infallible. When draw- * ing our comparison, we used the lowest commercial value of each Brand.as shown in the record, viz: Sample No. 58, Plow Brand, commercial value ?28.34. Sample No. 34, Pacific Guano, commercial value $25.34. To be more zealous in our efforts to boom the Plow Brand and use its highest commercial value in comparison with the lowest of the Pacific, as has been the plan of my friend of the Pacific, the record will show a difference in favor of the Plow Brand of 34,69. We waive this comparison for the present, and squarely claim that when ottering the Plow Brand we offer a goods 33.00 per ton better than any sold in this market, but we will not ask you to pay us the difference in price.
