A Fine Address.?The address of Cap-! tain F. W. Dawson before the Association of the Maryland Line, delivered in Baltimore on the night of the 22nd ultimo, is an exceptionally fine production. Taking for his theme "Our Women in the War," ho paid a just tribute to those whose virtues shone brightest when trials were greatest, and also made a most valuable contribution to the history of the times of which he spoke. The address is in good taste and scholarly throughout. Captain Dawson received a splendid welcome in Baltimore, and for his address, which is eloquent in the bare recital of fact9, the thanks, gratitude ? - - --J 1 ?< ana appiause 01 men ana wuuieu vi mc South are justly due him. The West Virginia Senatorship.? Governor Wilson, of West Virginia, has tendered the United States Senatorship to D. B. Lucas, of Jefferson county, who was one of the twelve Democratic "kickers" in the recent Senatorial contest. Lucas has accepted the tender and will receive the credentials shortly after the fourth of March next. The Railroad Commissioners.?It seems to be decided that the President must either appoint the Inter-State Commerce Commissioners before Congress adjourns or call an extra session. If he chooses the former alternative, he cannot, under the law. appoint any member of either branch ol the present Congress, unless the member or members selected resign their positions. Gone to Europe.?Capt. F. W. Dawson, editor of the News and Courier, sailed from New York-for Havre by the steamship jBurgoyne, of the French Line, on Saturday morning last. He will go to Lausanne, Switzerland, where his family have been residing for the past year, and before his return to the United States will visit London. Capt. Dawson will probably be absent from Charleston about two months. ? During the opening of Spring I was very weak, scarcely able to walk half a mile without resting, and after using one bottle of the Tonic my strength increased and my appetite improved, until I can walk four miles an hour and eat as many beans, etc., as any ordinary man. Last week we spoke of the difficulties that some noted authors had experienced in getting their best works before the reading world, the miserable pittance received for them, and the tardiness of the public in recognizing genius and merit. Continuing, we note that Thackeray's "Vanity Fair" and Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre" acknowledged as standard works of fiction to day, were refused by publishers many times. From all this we mav draw conclusions. If the authors had not had confidence in the merit of their productions, and that the}' would eventually be acknowledged and appreciated by the world, they would neyer have persevered in their efforts to have them published. As it was with the authors, so it has been with Longman ife Martinez. Many years ago when they first put their Pure Prepared Paint on the market, the public would have none of it. They had been misled by worthless goods and esteemed the Longman <fc Martinez Paint as of a sort with that they had known and used. But the manufacturers" were not discouraged ; they * 1' T*"!-?* ? ?/\nr on nnri_ k new iti3L ineir I'ftiuis w ci u mm m c uu??^ o u^v* a or to any other paint produced, and they struggled on until at last the. public, couvinced that they sold just what they claimed, gave them their confidence and to day "they can say "success is ours."
