To the Voters of York County: The office of COUNTY COMMISSIONER is justly regarded as one of the most responsible positions of public trust in the county. The importance of the position is properly estimated by our State Judiciary, who seldom, in charging grand juries, omit to remind them, as also the Commissioners themselves, of the importance of the office, and the power in their hands for the weal or the woe of the people whom they serve. Recognizing this fact, and without depreciating the claims of any one of the worthy citizens now before the voters of York for their suffrages for the office, we respectfully beg to nominate for re-election the present Clerk of the Board, Dr. JAMES B. ALLISON. It was the intention of Dr. Allison not to be a candidate for re-election; but citizens who were anxious for him to continue in the position, have urged him to reconsider his determination, and in accordance with their wishes, he has consented for his name to be announced as a candidate, provided that he shall not be subjected to the expense and labor of making a canvass of the county. And in proposing his name for reelection, we feel that with his past public services before the people, a canvass by him at this time would be entirely unnecessary?in the sense that an office-seeking canvass is usually made?for the purpose of becoming acquainted with the people and soliciting their votes on condition of rendering faithful and efficient service. While he has held the office sufficiently long to have become known by the people of every section of the county, his past record is sufficient guarantee of a faithful discharge of his duties in the future. But while his efficiency must be admitted by all, there are other and no less important considerations for recommending him for the office, a principal one of which is his place of residence being at the Court House. The convenience of having at least one member of the Board resident at the Court House, where he may be seen and consulted, or records of the office examined at any time, has been demonstrated on numerous occasions since Dr. Allison has been a member of the Board; and as regular meetings of the Board are not held oftener than twice a month, the convenience of having a member accessible in the office at all times, is one of great consequence to the people, requiring no elaboration within the limits of an advertisement. While Dr. Allison has always been accessible, except when out of town on official business, he is also courteous and accommodating in serving the public, whether called upon at any unusual time, or during a regular meeting of the Board. To the Supervisors of Rou?lsaii<l Bridges in York County. \rOU are hereby directed to put the roads and X bridges of your respective highway districts in good order. The Board of County Commissioners require that the road hands of each and every district be called out, and at least twelve days' work, for the year lfWd, be done, if necessary* All dead trees and hanging limbs on the roadsides must be removed, all loose rocks thrown from the roadbed, and mileposts lying on the ground replaced in position. The" law makes it the duty of superintendents of highways to cause all roads in their respective districts to be posted and numbered, and a pointer placed at each fork of said roads, declaring the direction of said roads. The following abstract of the road law is published for the information of all concerned: All able-bodied males between the ages of sixteen and fifty are liable annually to work the roads not less than three nor more than twelve days, under direction of the road overseer, or pay one dollar per day in lieu of such labor.
