Correspondence of the Yorkville Enquirer. LETTER FROM ROCK HILL. Rock Hill, March 15.?As the day approaches for holding the township election for the subscription to the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railroad, more interest is being manifested. The result of the election last Saturday iti York township was looked for with much interest, and when the result was made known on Saturday night the friends of the road were very much encouraged. On Saturday morning a meeting of those opposed to the subscription was held at Shiloh, seven miles below this place. The meeting was not largely attended. The friends of this great enterprise in Catawba township are very sanguine. The concert on last Monday night, by some of our home talent, assisted by Prof. Baker, of Charlotte, was a grand success, and was highly appreciated by the large onrlionna rohinh u'lis ilpliffhtprl with the singing and acting of Misses Gerter Davis, Nannie Keesler and Alice Land, in "The Three Little Sisters," and "Yum-Yum" from Mikado. When Mr. B. J. Barber sung " 'Tis money Makes the Mare Go," the roof was almost taken from the house. It was p. certainly a delightful entertainment, and all connected with it deserve much credit. 1* only hope that they may be induced to repeat it. Our town is soon to lose a good citizen in the person of Mr. A. R. Heyward, who will remove to Columbia, where he has accepted a position in the office of the Auditor of the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad Company. Mr. Heyward has been the depot agent at this place for the last twelve years and has always discharged the duties of the office satisfactorily to the . company and its patrons. Mr. M. C. Goines, of Columbia, will be appointed depot agent here in place of Mr. Heyward. At its last meeting the Town Council passed an ordinance requiring all persons selling fresh meats before 9 A. M., and after 4 P. M. to pay a town tax of a year. From 9 to 4 any one is allowed to sell it in any quantity. Mr. W. S. May will attend the examination to be held by the Civil Service Commission in Charleston on the 22nd instant. When there is anything good to eat going the rounds it is seldom that a newspaper correspondent is remembered ; but Hal was in luck on Saturday, when he was preL.. Davidson, formerly of Mecklenburg county, X. C., took charge of the Rock Hill Academy to-day, and intends to make of it a school that will be a credit to any town in the State. He is a man of learning and energy, and it is hoped that he will succeed in his undertaking. A good school adds a great deal to the prosperity of any town. Hal. liferkf glqjorts. Many people saw and read the advertisement in this paper, about the house on" which Longman A Martinez' Paint had remained in good conditionfor 14 years. None that we have talked with about it doubt the truth of the assertion, but say it is very remarkable. It is quite remarkable and we are dispesed to think that the affirmation could be true only of the Longman Martinez* Paint. We have on hand a big stock of these goods and we trust that when the robins nest again, and Nature puts on her vernal robes and the trees their Spring bonnets, that with the aid of these Paints many a faded, blackened or unpainted house in this county will vie with the Old Dame in the beauty of their appearance. The lawyer who gets strong grip on all points in his case will have verdicts in his favor. The farmer who has strong grip of the plow handles, and don't go fishing Saturdays, will have full garners. The merchant who has stronggrip on all thedetails of his business, and is not "deceitful on weights" will add to his store. The Piedmont lleauty Tobacco, from its honesty and purity, has gotten strong grip on the palates of this ruminating generation, which accounts for the daily increasing demand for it. TWO or three years ago the publishers of the Charleston Weekly News and Courier conceived the idea that the women of the South could, if they were given the opportunity, write some interesting sketches of home life during the war, and requested different ladies of several of the Southern States, particularly Virginia, South Carolinaand Georgia, to contribute articles on the subject. The result was that SEVEXTYXTXE sketches were published in the paper and such great interest was manifested in them that after the series had been completed the publishers decided to issue them in book form. This was done, and the result is a handsome volume of 4S2 pages, printed on good white paper and bound in cloth.
