twenty miles. It is also said that the Wilmington and Weldon Road will secure the lease of the Atlantic and North Carolina Road from Goldsboro' to Morehad City. This is an important matter. The Richmond and Dauville is the most formidable opponent in securing the lease. It is an open secret that the Wilmington and Weldon, like the Ricmond and Danville system, desires to branch out in North Carolina. An attempt may be made to make a prominent port out of Morehead City, whose fine opportunities have always been wasted. That the lease will be made on 18th instant is probable." Correspondence of the Yorkvilie Enquirer. LETTER FROM CHESTER. UHESTER, June 1U.?AC a lace meoLiug ui the Lee Light Infantry, Senator Patterson was re-elected Captain, C. H. Brice, First Lieutenant, G. D. Heath, Second Lieutenant, and J. L. Glenn, Junior Second Lieutenant. The following non-commissioned officers were elected: T. N. Berry, First Sergeant, F. M. Poozer. Second Sergeant, J. A. Graham, Third Sergeant, T. L. Alexander, Fourth Sergeant, W. B. Murr, Fifth Sergeant, J. A. Childs, First Corporal, J. G. Baird, Second Corporal, R. C. Brandt, Third Corporal, J. E. Curry, Fourth Corporal. The annual target shooting ol the company will take place on the 26th in. stent. The members are looking forward to this occasion with great pleasure. At the late meeting forty honorary members and five active members were elected. The former are relieved from drilling and attendance upon meetings, but are accorded the pleasure of making a monthly contribution to aid in defraying the expenses of the Company. A festival was held at the skating rink on last Wednesday evening in the interest oi the Baptist Church. It was under the management of the ladies and girls of the congregation, and was a successful and pleasant affair. The Flower department was a prominent feature of the festival. The receipts of the evening were about $46. Every section of the county was visited nr.fK f!nci t-oino luct wppk. The farmers VY lilt UUV M. UiUU ?* WW?. give good reports of the cotton and corn crops. They are now engaged in harvesting the wheat and oats crops, which have been greatly improved by the late rains. The agricultural outlook is quite promising at present. The Chester Base Ball Club has been practicing considerably of late. They leave for Rock Hill to-morrow to have a match game with their brethren at that place. The latter must do their best playing if they expect to beat the Chester boys. Velocipede riding is a popular amusement among the young men of this place. When the bell rings at 6J o'clock for the closing of stores, quite a number mount their bycicles and pleasantly spend an hour in this sport. It is not unlikely that a bycicle contest will be one of the attractions of the next Chester Fair. The examination at the Chester graded school takes place this week. The school is still under the management of Prof. W. H. Witherow, and still retains its popularity. The pupils, by their thorough knowledge of tneir studies, will doubtless reflect credit upon their teachers. Mr. John Melton, of the north-western portion of this county, had a stroke of paralysis on last Friday and died in a few hours. At the time of the paralytic stroke he was riding a mule, from which he fell and was afterwards found in an insensiDie condition. He was a very successful farmer. The Circuit Court for this county met today, Judge Witherspoon presiding. The Judge, after some general instructions, charged the grand jury to investigate and report as to the enforcement of the laws forbiding the sale of intoxicating liquors without license, and the carrying ot concealed weapons. He said there were probably persons within the sound of his voice who had pistols buckled around them, who had either a contempt for the law, or doubted its ability to protect them. He earnestly charged the grand jury to take such action as will secure the enforcement of these laws, trampled as they are under the feet Of their violators. After the charge the grand "jury withdrew for the consideration of some bills given them by the Solicitor. The case, continued from the last Court, of State vs. Toney Fowler and Jerry Paul, both colored, charged with an assault and battery of an aggravated nature, was taken up. The grand jury found true bills in the following cases: Richard Shirley, charged with disturbing religious meeting, Robert McCrowny, charged with selling intoxicating liquors without license, Amy Ingrahain, charged with arson, and also charged with assault and battery with intent to kill. A picnicgiven by the pupils of Mr. Torbit Henry's school, and two other schools, will take place at pleasant Grove in this county on the 23rd instant. The Lewisville Band will furnish music on the occasion. Mr. F. T. Morgan will deliver an address, The large crowd that will be in attendance will be pleased with our young friend's address, for his ability to interest an audience has already been shown. The grand jury found true bills in the following cases: Jerry Boylis, charged with burglary and larceny, Richard Summers, charged with an assault of an agravated nature and intent to kill, J. J. Cain, charged with selling intoxicating liquors without license. Jerry Boylis made a confession ol his guilt. The court was engaged almost the entire morning in the trial of the case of Toney Fowler and Jerry Paul. At the ^ present writing the jury have not agreed on T a verdict. m. Iltarkt sports.
