was fully developed by that great master, i the art of portrait painting, while his skillfi brush has produced many ideal paintings c pronounced merit. Ilis work is his best r< commendation as an artist, and those who ma desire portrait painting executed in the higl est style of the art, are invited to give the on above referred to an inspection. ANOTHER HOHliJDE. On Sunday evening last, shortly after dari on the plantation of J. A. L. M. Stewart, nea Clay Hill, in this county, a negro named Ruf Warren was killed by a pistol in the hands c a white man named William Barron. Tb facts, as we learn them, are substantially a follows : Barron and William Williford, bot white, went to a negro house on Mr. Stewart1 premises and asked the women of the houst several negro men, however, being present, t prepare them some supper. This was done and after the meal was eaten, a difficulty oc curred in the vard between Williford and Ruf Warren. Our information is that Warron ha knocked Williford down and was beating hire when Barron, who was standing in the dooi drew his pistol and fired at Warren, the bal lodging in his head and- killing him instantly Barron then fired his pistol at George Tatf colored, inflicting a severe wound in Tate" shoulder. Barron then fled, and at the lates accounts had not been apprehended. Asusua in such occurrences whisky was the cause o the mischief. TOTE IS THE ST^TE. The official report of the vote in Soutl Carolina at the last election shows some sur prising results. The whole numljer of vote cast for the candidates for Governor wa 87,877. This is considerably less than one half of the entire vote in the State, which according to the Census of 1880, was 205,789 3 At the election of 1876 the total, vote cas was 182,682. In 1880 the total vote for Presi dent wa3 170,976. The falling off in the vote we presume, is accounted for by the systen of registering voters which is now in force. This registration has unquestionably pre vented repeating and fraudulent voting, am a very considerable number of persons faile< to register. The entire registered vote of thi State, we believe, is about 150,000 which ii 55,789 less than the voting population accord ing to the United States Census. Betweei 20,000 and 25,000 white voters failed to register and were unable to vote. A significant feature of the election is th< disparity between the registered vote and tin vote as cast. Putting ti e registered vote a: 150,000, then about 65,000 qualified voters die not vote, or deposit their ballots in boxe: other than those provided by law. The great er part of the difference, we imagine, is ac counted for by the failure to vote. In tin county of Charleston, for example, the tota unfn f,,r r;<?vprnnr whs 4.501. while the retris tered vote was over 8,000. A coneiderabli number of votes were lost by being placed ii the wrong ballot-boxes, and we presume thai a -thousand voters or more were challenger at the polls as having registered fraudulently or as being disqualified by reason of convic tior> for crime enumerated in the election law It is evident, however, that a very considera ble number of voters did not take the trouble to vote at all. This is a serious and far froir re-assuring circumstance of the election? Xews and Courier. The Berkeley Election.?Under thede cision of the Board of State Canvassers a sorl of mixed ticket is elected in Berkeley county, The colored people have an enormous majoritj in the county, but were willing to give the Democrats certain places on the ticket. The Mackey Republican Convention offered terra.' which the Democrats declined to accept. The Lee Republicans thereupon offered terms which were accepted. The outcome of it is thai Hendricks, the Republican candidate for slier iff, who was voted for by the Democrats, if declared elected, and Dr. Wiggins, the Demo cratic candidate for coroner, who was voted for by the Lee Republicans, is declared elected ; that Mr. P. Bacot Alston, the Democratic candidate for Probate Judge, who was voted for by the Lee Republicans, is declared elected and that D. G. Middleton, colored, who was the Mackey candidate for school commissioner, is declared elected. The candidates for State Senator and for Representatives on the joint Democratic and Lee Republican ticket alsc contest the election, which contests will bede cided by the Senate and House of Representatives respectively.?Xeics and Courier. A Tammany View.?Alluding to the next Congress and its huge Democratic majority, John Kelly, the Tammany leader, recently sam : It will depend on the manner in which the Democrats use their power whether or notthej retain the confidence of the Nation. If the) use their power foolishly or criminally the) will again become the minority. What i.< needed is economy in "the administration ol the Government?not voting of the public lands to corporations ; a change in the tarifl such as will protect the people of this country from a disastrous competition from foreigr manufacturers, and yet will not lie in the in terest of monopolies ; and no sj>ecial legisla tion for individuals. On the this broad grounc the Democratic party can retain power. If il weakly yields to individual interests it wil surely be defeated again. All of which is strictly true and worthy ol being followed to the letter. The Democrat! will be on trial, and, if found faithful, tin people will give them full power. jfiitaitud anb (Commercial. BREWSTER, who is it that is doing such awful things that I have been hearing P. of those past few months? Whv, that troublesome man, DOBSON, who runs the NEW YORK DRY' GOODS STORE in Y'orkville. I never, in all my life, heard of such a man. Well, now, Mrs. Freelinghuyson, 1 will tell you what it is, but you must promise not to tell any one. Why, of course, I will not. Now for it. Whv he is selling such piles of DRY" GOODS, and the cause of it is this, he is selling so cheap, puts up with such short profits, not that his goods are so much better, or that he is so much more popular than other merchants, (for I can tell you he has plenty of enemies, and many of them were made by his kindness in past years?selling them goods on time; and when* pay-day came, Mrs. Brewster, they got vexed at him because he wanted his money. Just as true as .preaching); but to return to the cause of DOBSON'S goods being so popular, DOBSON has been noted all his life, for being leader in low prices, fair dealing and never to misrepresent goods to make sales. Now, Mrs. Freelinghuvson, I have been shopping all round and have just come to the conclusion that DOBSON'S is the place to buy Dry | Goods. Well, Mrs. Brewster, many, yes, a great many persons are just in the same not ion that you are, that DOB80N\S is the place to pet the full value, or as near full value, for your money, as can be Pi had in the great city of Yorkville.
