State. In proof of this it is certain that the
"party" is throwing every obstacle in the way
of the people who are under a normal condition
of affairs, supposed to be at least a part
of the Democratic party.

There is $9,000,000 invested in Chicago in
slaughtering beef and sending it in refrigerating
cars to the large cities on the Atlantic
seaboard. Postmaster-General Howe will
recommend a postal telegraph in his next message.
There are eight or ten firms in
New York city engaged in shipping fruits and
vegetables South, the same class that the
South in the earlier season ships North. ?In
Northern and Central Texas heavy rains have
fallen during the past week, accompanied in
? A. A
some sections Dy strong wuius. irpeu cuium
is damaged fully a grade from dirt and stain.
The crop in some instances is entirely lost.
Picking is delayed* and the supply of labor is
not equal to the demand. Confederate
bonds are quoted in London at $13 per thousand.
The Commissioner of Indian affairs,
in his annual report, says that the Indians
are making favorable progress in civilization.
It is rumored that a big syndicate,
composed of capitalists in Chicago", St.
Louis and Cincinnati, has been formed to corner
November corn. There was slight
frost at Memphis, Tennessee, last Saturday
morning, though not sufficient to kill vegetation.
The trial of the case of Charles A.
Strout, against seven students of Bowdoin
College for damages on account of injuries indicted
while hazing freshmen, was concluded
at Portland, Maine, last Saturday. The jury
returned a verdict of $2,700 damages against
the seven students. The corn crop of
Kentucky this year is the largest ever made
in that State. The distillers .are the principal i
buyers and they fix the price. On the 17th I
instant, the first train passed over the entire
length of the Seaboard and Raleigh Railroad I
from Tarboro to Williamston, N. C. This
road opens up a fine country and makes impor- i
tant local connections. ? The rumor has been
extensively circulated, but is denied with
equal vehemence, that the Danville Railroad
combination has sold out the lines of road under
its control and management to the Standard
Oil Company.

That Cotton Seed Oil is a perfect substitute for

favor. The pure white winter pressed Oil can be
bought at the York Drugstore.

stock-of Prepared Paints, raw and boiled Oils,
genera] and house-painting material. We are
