room until-the court reassembled. The rumor that the jury had agreed was quickly spread from one to another, and an excited crowd surged back into the court room. First in the procession of actors in the drama came the prisoner with quick, nervous step, and as he seated himself in <he dock the light of a solitary candle fell full upon his face and disclosed its" more than usual pallor. Not a tremor of the limbs or a movement of the muscles of the face was observable as he threw back his head and fixed his gaze upon the door through which the jury were to enter. Judge Cox took his seat, and the crier called "Order," and the jury at 5.35 filed slowly into their seats. Every sound was hushed save the voice of the clerk as he put to the foreman the usual inquiry, "Have you agreed ?" Clear and distinct came the reply, "We have." "What is your verdict, guilty or not guilty?" "Guilty, as lnciictea." Then the pent up feelings of the crowd found expression in uproarious demonstrations of applause and approval. "Order! order!" shouted the bailiff. "Mr. Scoville and counsel for the prosecution were simultaneously upon their feet. Mr. Scoville attempted to .address the Court, but the District Attorney shouted : ""Wait till you have the verdict complete and in due form of law." Order was at length restored, and the clerk, again addressing the jury said : "Your foreman says 'Guilty as indicted.' So say you all V" "We do," they all responded. Another demonstration of approval followed this announcement, but not so prolonged as the first. Mr. Scoville, still upon his feet, demanded a poll of the jury, which, w.is granted, and each juror was called by name, and each in a firm voice promptly responded, "Guilty." As the last named was called the prisoner screamed: "The vengeance of Almighty God will be upon you for this outrage. My blood will be upon the heads of that jury. Don't you forget it." Mr. Scoville again addressed the Court, saying: "Your Honor I do not desire to forfeit any rights I may have under the law and pratice in this District. If there is anything that I ought to do now to save those rights I would be indebted to your Honor to indicate it to me." Judge Cox in reply assured him that he should have every opportunity, and that he would be accorded all the time allowed by law within which to file his exceptions, and he would also be entitled to four days within which to move in arrest of judgment. Judge Cox then turned to the jury, and said: "Gentlemen of the Jury?I cannot express too many thanks for the manner in which you have discharged your duty. You have richly merited the thanks of yoiir countrymen, and I feel assured you will take with you to your homes the approval of your consciences. With thanks, gentlemen of the jury, I dismiss you." With this announcement the Court was deflrirpd arlinnrned. On Saturday at noon Scoville filed with the Clerk of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia the papers u}>on which he bases his motion or motions for a new trial. Not being familiar with the practice of this District, Scoville concluded to file two motions, to assure himself against the possibility of being deprived, through any legal technicality, of the right of review by the Court in general term. The prayers filed in support of the motion are : The prisoner's affidavit; the affidavit of Frederick II. Snyder as to the finding of a newspaper under circumstances indicating that it had been read by the jury; the affidavit of J. W. Guiteau that he is acquainted with the signatures of the five jurors whose names are written on the margin of the newspaper said to have been seen by the jury. That he has seen them write their names and believes the writing upon said newspapers to have been made by the jurors named. The last affidavit is that of Scoville, setting forth newly discovered evidence upon which he bases his motion for a new trial. The motion for a new trial on alleged improper conduct of the jury, will be heard tomorrow, for which purpose the jurors will be cited to appear before Judge Cox. Scoville has issued an address, saying that he lias defended Guiteau from loyalty to his wife, who isGuiteau's sister, from his belief in the insanity of the prisoner, and to save the Nation from the disgrace of hanging an insane and irresi?onsible man to gratify popular vengeance, and for the purpose of placing on the records1 of history the impossibility of an American citizen of sound mind shooting the President of the United States. Scoville's means are exhausted. The expenses will require at least ?9 nnu Should sufficient monfv not be fur nislied, what is contributed will be refunded on request. His address until February 4 will l>e George Scoville, Washington. Commercial. YORKVILLE, February 1.?Cotton quiet and but little offering. Prices range from 7 to 103 cents. IMPROVED HARRIS' FERTILIZER. BEST BESULTSi WITH LEAST EXPENSE. SFthe destructive drouth of the past season has taught the farmer of the county a lesson at , it is, that he must find and adopt a more economical method of fertilizing his crops. On the very threshold of his farm operations, be necessarily incurs one of the largest obligations he has to meet, and the hardest of all to pay, should the season prove unfavorable. Whilst it is conceded that in ordinary seasons the use of acid phosphate and guanos is remunerative, it takes too great a per cent, of the crop raised to pay for tbem. There is money in them; but not enough. The want of the farmer, therefore, is a Cheap Fertilizer?one known to contain all the fertilizing elements of the high grade commercial manures?at a less price And right here we claim, as we have been advocating it for the past ten years, that this want can be met and filled only by the use of fertilizing chemicals in connection with home made manures. The resources of the stable and barn-yard are often wasted ; a thousand pounds of stable manure, which is about a two-horse load, beingthrown broadcast over one-fourth of an acre of land, when, if it had been manipulated with a few bushels of cotton seed and the proper fertilizing chemicals, would have made a mixture as valuable, pound for pound, as the highest grade guano or acid phospnate on the market. Every comparative statement that we have seen, made by men who have investigated the subject, shows a balance largely in favor of the use of chemical fertilizers, and the time should come, and will come, when there will be a guano factory on every farm, and every farmer will be his own president, secretary, cashier, general agent, agent and sub-agent, and will receive all the commissions. discounts and profits of the business. We have said tbis much for chemical manures in general, for the purpose of calling attention in particular to our IMPROVED HARRIS' FERTILIZER, a chemical manure, which, we claim. fillH the felt want of an economical fertilizer, ana is richer in the phosphates, nitrogenous matter, ammonia, soda and potash, the very essence ol high-grade commercial manures, than any other chemical fertilizer in the market, and that they are combined in such proportions as to produce, with the home-made ingredients, a plant food that is adapted to the most exacting crop. We nave sold this formula for the past ten years, and the numerous testimonials published, an? the continued and increasing demand, show the esteem in which it is held by those who have used it. But we know that all the farmersin the county will not use the Improved Harris' Fertilizer, and that we could not supply them this season, if they desired us to do so, and since they demand commercial fertilizers, we are prepared to supply them with an imported DISSOLVED BONE tnat the manufacturers claim has no equal in tho market. It is manufactured in Dublin, Ireland, from animal bones shipped from South America, and being a pure dissolved bone, contains more phosphoric acid and bone phosphate of lime, the two ingredients that tlx and determine the value of an acid phosphate, than can be obtained from t the phosphate rock. We also furnish an Ammoniated Bone Super Phosphate, of very high standard, manufactured by the same company. PRICES: Improved Harris' Fertilizer.?Time price, $16.00. Freight, payable in advance, $1.95. Dissolved Bone.?Time price, 350 lbs. middling cotton, or on time, payable in currency, $36.
