every county reports the condition and prospects of the plant worse, the average for the State being 39.8 per cent. Worms are doing considerable damage in some places, especially to the growth started since the rain. There are thirteen reports- which note their having eaten, or that they are eating, the top ' crop, and fifty-two that there are none. The average yield of seed cotton is estimated at 553 pounds per acre, while last year it was 635 pounds. The prospect for a top crop is very poor?only eight correspondents regarding it good, while twenty-four say it is poor, and thirty-three that there can be none. From Georgia and Florida there are reports from one hundred and six counties, containing over 90 per cent, of the cotton lands of these States. From one hundred and thir tyseven of the correspondents tne weamer is reported favorable for picking, while only thirteen report it unfavorable. It has been, however, generally unfavorable to the further growth and development of the plant, as one hundred and fifteen correspondents report it bad, while only thirty-five say it has been good. There are thirty-eight which say the - plant is still healthy and fruiting, mainly in the richer and bottom lands; one hundred and twelve report it as having stopped fruiting. According to thirty-two replies, the plaut has improved iu condition and prospect since August 23, twenty eight say it is unchanged, and ninety that it is worse. As compared with the same date last year, seven counties, raising 5J per cent, of the crop of these States, say the condition and prospect is equal, while ninety-nine counties report it as worse. The average of the entire two States is 28.8 per cent, below last year. Worms are doing considerable damage in both States, especially in Georgia, where they have appeared in great numbers since the rains caused the plant to grow again. They are eating all the new foliage aud young bolls, thus destroying the top crop. There are sixty-nine correspondents who say they have done serious injury ; eighteen, slight damage, aud sixty-three that no damage has been done. These renorts are generally from uplands, where the plant has dried up, and where worms seldom appear. The average yield of seed cotton per acre is estimated at 348 pounds this year; it was 531 pounds last year. A good prospect for a top crop is reported by thirty correspondents, while one hundred and twenty report there will be very little or none. The sea island crop has also suffered injury from the long drouth and the storm at the end of August. At last reports the plant was shedding badly, especially in South Carolina. The crops of Georgia and Florida are more promising. The entire crop is estimated to be about 20 per cent, worse than the crop of last year. Cokesbury, S. C., Jan. 28, 1880. _ Dr. L. T.
