twenty five cents a head, without permission to talk to him?which shows that he has a shrewd eye to business. He said many low-country people and strangers at Asheville had come to see him, and he complained of their talking too much and asking him "onfair" questions. He spoke with considerable disgust of the book purporting to be an ccount of his life and adventures that i has been issued by a Northern publisher. He said he was too sick to read much of it I when he had it in the Asheville jail, but seemed somewhat amused at some of the stories it told. He gave a humorous account of his capture, and it must be admitted that a man who can find fun in having six bullet holes drilled into him, has an uncommonly keen sense of the ridiculous. He says he took dinner with the officers at Charleston ouly a few days before his capture, and told them then if they ever wanted him, to come for him like gentlemen and he would go quietly, although he of course would not be driven like a brute. He says he was going for a squirrel for his sick wife when tired on from ambush, and that, when firing began, he simply walked back towards his house, with his gun banging in his hand until it was struck in the barrel by a rifle ball and knocked to the ground. The six revenuers, he says, were the poorest hands to shoot a gun he ever saw. All the timber around was shot up fifteen feet from the ground, he felt sure?here there was a gleam in his eyes that must have been like his old self?that he could have whipped the whole crowd with rocks. There were thirteen holes in his clothes and four bullets still remain in his body, but he suffers no inconvenience, except that he cannot straighten the leaders in his left leg, which were cut. He has made arrangements to see all who desire to visit him if they will pay twentyfive cents apiece for the privilege and refrain * from talking to him. This will doubtless be a profitable speculation, and a practical demonstration of the pecuniary value and substantial nature of much derided Fame. There are five charges against him in this Court, under two of which indictments have been found.. One of these is for conspiracy against officers of the United States government?the attack and recapture of captured blockade whisky?and the other is for fraudulent removal and concealment of distilled spirits. The remaining three charges are for obstructing officers, resisting officers and assaulting officers. Major Redmond seems quite confident of being cleared. He has secured as counsel Mr. K. A. Child, of Pickens, and General A. C. Garlington, of this city, who will make a vigorous defense.? Greenville Win? 1 9th rnatnnt.. BY TELEGRAPH. LATEST FROM THE PRESIDENT. Official Bulletin.
