wisdom, aud tbat you will achieve a worthy success. Thanking you for this meeting and greetiug, I bid you good morning." The company were then preseuted singly to the President and his wife. Miss Ransom, on behalf of the ladies, besought a meeting with President Garfield's mother, which was accorded. Hancock's Reception at Washington. If we may credit the various reports, even from Republican sources, Hancock's reception at Washington on the day of the inauguration was even more enthusiastic than Garfield's. While he had received a formal invitation from the committee of arrangements to attend, which he gracefully accepted, it also proved, by virtue ot ins military position and the department he commands, to be his duty to be present on that occasion. The National Republican gives the following account of the General's reception : The General and staff were then taken rapidly through the crowd, who cheered madly upon sight of his well known features, to carriages in front of the depot. In the first carriages were General Hancock, Generals Mitch-h and Fry, of his staff', and Colonel O'Beirue; in the second carriage, General Perry (also of General Hancock's staff,) Colonel H. C. Corbin, with the remaining members of the committee in the third carriage. As the line of vehicles turned iuto sixth street, the Washington Light Infantry, which formed the military escort, presented arms, while the band struck up "Hail to the Chief," and the multitude shouted themselves hoarse. During the progress of the procession up the Avenue the crowd continued to increase in numbers and enthusiasm, and several times made hn effort to take the horses from the carriage in which General Hancock was riding, and were only deterred by his earnest objections. When Worm ley's was reached, the crowd surged around into Ii street and completely bloeked up every approach to the hotel. General Hancock alighted and was escorted to his rooms by the committee, and after depositing his wraps, was conducted back to the portico, where General Creswell presented him to the multitude. The crowd ? swayed back and forth and hurrahed like mad as General Hancock stepped forward and said : "Gentlemen : I had been notified that I was \-oil w tlm chairman and some of the members of one of your committees, but bad no idea that I was to be escorted to my hotel by a company of military, nor did I have any idea that you would gather in such large numbers to welcome me. Then it fills me with gratitude to contemplate this vast array of people who have marched with ine to my hotel. I wish to apologize for detaining you so long at the depot awaiting my arrival, for putting you to so much trouble, and for selecting such unseasonable weather for visiting the Capital. If you will pardon this, I will thank you for the "great honor you have conferred on" me and bid you goodnight." At the conclusion of this speech, the crowd gave three cheers and a "tiger" for General Hancock, who withdrew to his private parlor, where he held for some time an informal receptiom, shaking hands with many of his old army friends and political admirers. The rooms assigned to General Hancock at Worraley's were profusely decorated with flowers, the back of the divan being literal ly covered with a huge pillow of roses and calla lillies, while on the mantle was a beautiful basket of flowers from Mrs. W. A. Field, of Texas. During the progress of General Hancock's speech, the ladies at the hotel had gathered in the large parlor on the left of the hall, and, as the speech was concluded, they joiued in the applause. As General Hancock turned from bowing his acknowledgements to the crowd outside, some out; said : "General, here are the ladies, it is in order for you to salute them." General Hancock laughed heartily at this suggestion, and replied : "No; that would be an infringement of the especial privilege of my superior. General Sherman is the only man in the army who has carte blanche to kiss the girls." New Words.?The new Edition of Webster'?. Unabridged Dictionary, numbering 1928 quarto pages, contains nearly 5,000 new words or new meanings of old ones. These words range over the fields of science, medicine, invention, discovery, research, etc., departments which in this age are constantly yielding fresh ideas, requiring new words to express them. That they have not been hastily compiled is evidenced by the accuracy of and careful study given to their etymology and definitions. The intelligent reader, or any reader who would be intelligent, will find this feature of the dictionary quite iudispeusable. Commercial. YORKVILLE, March 1G.?Cotton 5 to 10.30.
