to pay SI 2.50 per month each, for all the convicts that cau be spared. There are ?46,000 worth of convicts hired out at present, for money, besides those hired for scrip. The Board require a bond of ?10,000 for every 100 convicts hired out. The proposition of Mr. Divert, of New Jersey, who wished to establish a shoe factory within the peuitentiary with 200 hands, the number to be hereafter increased to 500 or ^ 600, was not accepted, because the convicts were already leased, and on better terms than those offered by Mr. Divert. The Superintendent was directed to purchase twelve acres of land from Mr. Robertson for a burying ground. l'lie i'cauouy runu. The board of trustees of the Peabody Fund had a meeting in Washington on last Thursday. The following is a synopsis of the proceedings: Miss Sears, daughter of the late general agent, submitted au informal report of the work of her father during the past year, which evidenced gratifying progress in the cause of education throughout the South. Secretary Evarts, Chief Justice Waite, Judge Manning, Judge Jackson and Bishop Whipple, the committee appointed to report as to the future policy of work under the fund, reported a resolution directing the general agent to expend, as far as possible, the revenues in the education of teachers for Southern schools, but giving authority to the general agent of the executive committee to expend a sum not exceeding two-thirds of the income for destitute schools. The election of a successor to the late general agent, resulted in the selection of Rev. J. L. M. Curry, of Richmond, Va. There were about twenty applicants for the position. The treasurer's annual report showed an available increase for the coming year of A?or sqo nnn Judge Manning, of Louisiana, was appointed a committee to present to the Governor and Legislature of Mississippi, a memorial concerning Mississippi State bonds, which Mr. Peabody gave to the board for the purpose of their trust, amounting to 81,000,000, and which the State of Mississippi has repu-1 diated. The memorial will urge the payment of these bonds by the State for the beufit of the fund. The Rev. Dr. Curry, it is understood, will enter upon the discharge of his duties without delay. The next meeting of the board will be held in New York, on the first Monday in December, 1882. Standard of the English Language.? FACTS AND FIGURES. TWO old axioms teach us that Truth never dies and that figures never err. It is true, as we can demonstrate, that a ton of Improved Harris' Fertilizer will cost the farmer, including his stable manure and cotton seed, $20.30, ij is plain that this amount is less than one half the cost of a ton of Guano. It is true, also, and the ? fact has been established on the testimony of some of the best farmers in the county, that a ton of Improved Harris' Fertilizer possesses all the Fertilizing properties and value of a ton of Guano. Why tnen in the name of economy and progress does not every farmer use it ? SOME MORE LETTERS. Clark's Fork, York Countt, S. C., December 21, 1880. John C. Kuykendal: Dear Sir: I used your valuable manure, the Improved Harris' Fertilizer, this year, and find it ahead of anything I have ever tried Last year I used the John Merryman Guano on one field of cotton and made from it 4 bales of cotton. This year I used the Improved Harris on the same ground, no more nor no less, and j made 9i heavy bales. I don't want anything better for corn. I am perfectly conscientious in saying that I believe it doubled the yield of corn on which I applied it. I will, of course, want it for another season. Verv respectfully. " R. M. PLEXiCO. Turkey Creek, York County, S. C., December 10,1880. John C. Kuykendal: Dear Sir: Your Iinf roved Harris' Fertilizer is all you claim for it. used, beside yours, three staudard brands of Fertilizers, but yours was decidedly the best both on corn and cotton. I don't expect to use anything the next season but your Improved Harris' Fertilizer. Yours truly, It. ANDERSON LATHAM. mrsTfannie l. dobson THE EMPORIUM OF^FASHION MRS. FANNIE L. DOBSON, PROPRIETOR.
