bulldozing or frauds. He intimates that there will be no sqearaishness about this business, and that wherever there is a pretext, the Democratic members will have to go. He says that when Kellogg telegraphed him from New Orleans that the Democrats were registering there beyond the legal time, he simply replied that Kellogg should collect all the facts, and the matter would be righted by Congress, when the new Congress came together. The Democrats, we are told, are very much exciter! by this announcement. There is no doubt that when the Republicans once regain control of Congress they will pursue a relentless course toward their opponents iu the matter of election contests. Memphis Appeal.?Deiu. The Democrats have beeu badly beaten. The have suffered a complete Waterloo de feat. The assurances on which we built our hopes of success were as a mountain of sand to be washed away in a night out of sight by the flood of Republican votes. The solid South stands almost alone for Democratic principles. The sections are more sternly defined to-day thau they were in 1860. After attributing the defeat to the rousing of the passions and predjudices of the North against the South, the Appeal says : The political vie orv thus secured cannot last longer than the administration that is the result of it. The beat answer the South can make to the gross libels that have won for the Republican party a fresh lease of power, will be devotion to its material interests, a strict maintenance of the credit of its municipalities and States, a rapid settlement of vacant lands, the extension of its railroad system and enlargement of its public school system. For these the Sou'h is solid, and, believing still that the su premacy of Democratic principles is essential to the maintenance of our Government, it will continue to be solid and vote solidly for that party as long as it exists. ? Charleston News and Courier.?Uetn. Whatever the exact wa3' in which it came about, it is a hard fact that the Government of the United States, for the next four years, will be Republican in speech, purpose and action. The Republican President will apparently ha%'e at his Lack a Republican Con gress. What they will, they cau do with the Southern States and their people. We hope and believe, however, that the business interests which were the mainspring of Tuesday's wcrk will be opposed utterly to any ^ legislation that would, in any way, embarrass the agriculture and manufactures, trade and commerce of the South. It is to the interest of the North and West to take this position. They will do it whenever, and as soon as, the people of the Southern States cease to be opposed by the politicians as the would-be autocrats of the Union that they did their utmost to destroy. When the spectre of Southern supremacy is laid, the Northern people will be freer to exhibit their kindly and interested feelings. And one of the first questions that the Southern whites will have to ask themselves is, Whether tbe welfare of the South has been, and is likely to be, hindered or advanced'by the alliance with the Democrats of the North ? It does not hurt those gentry to be beaten. They are sure to have just and equal government in their States in any event. In losing politically, the South loses in pocket and in peace of mind. Will the South remain on the losing side, and, if so, on what terms and for what purpose? The Southern people, we fancy, will make themselves heard on this subject before the winter is past.
