Correspondence of Ibe Yorlcville Enquirer. LETTER FROM CHESTER. Chester, S. C., January 20.?Since my last, the weather has changed from warm and rainy - to clear, cold and bracing, which change has proved very acceptable to many. The cry of the "porker" has been heard pretty generally, which indicated that "hog-killing" time had k come. From reports, I learn that a good many ? l>ersons in this county have lost the pork they killed during the past month. The newly-elected town council met last Wednesday night and organized. The treasurer's report was received and adopted. Mr. J. C. McFadden was re-elected clerk and .treasurer. B. J. Randall was elected chief of police vice J. F. Green, who has filled the position for a number of years. W. T. Ford was elected street overseer and policeman, and Jake Gordon, colored, was re-elected lamp-lighter and nnlieemari. Several new street lamps are to be put up, and we are promised a good fire alarm. We have a good council, and all feel satisfied that the town government will be well administered. On Wednesday night last, the Lee Light Ini fantry, which organization suspended drills during the busy season, held a meeting, Capt. J. K. Marshall presiding. The members promptly paid their dues, and hereafter will have regular weekly drills at night. The "Lees" are fully alive, and will turn out as fine a company as can be found in the up-coiintry. Mr. J. Hendricks McLane, of Feasterville, in this county, recently returned from Washington, D. C., having been in attendance upon the Greenback convention held in that city. Mr. McLane brought with him a number of documents which he has distributed among our people. The party will hold a convention in Chicago, next June, for the purpose of nominating candidates for President and VicePresident. ^ ' At a recent meeting of Hopewell congregation (Associate Reformed Presbyterian) it was decided to allow the pastor, Rev. John A. White, to devote one half his ministerial services to the church at White Oak. From various portions of the county, I learn that the wheat and oat crops are looking fine; but they are seriously threatened, in some localities by the "Hessian" fly, which, it is feared, will cause serious injury to the crops. In an interview with W. H. Hardin, President of the Cheraw and Chester Railroad, he informed me that his road is in fine condition, with a good road-bed and equipments. t o sinontitiAa nf fertilizers are now being ^*5^ V1UWAV.V. t _ shipped over the road. The board of directors held a meeting last week at Catawba River, the present terminus, and made arrangements to extend the road to Lancaster at as early a day as practicable. A bridge will not lie built across the river at present; but a train will be placed on the other side and passeu* gers transferred, by which means through travel by rail will be accomplished. Fifty car-loads of guano have been received at this place within the last ten days, and those in position to know, estimate that '500 car-loads will be used in this county alone, the coming season. The new Methodist church at Blackstocks will be dedicated by Rev. A. M. Chrietzberg on the first Sunday in next month. The first quarterly meeting, for this year, of Chester station, will be held here on Saturday next. Rev. A. M. Chrietzberg, presiding elder, will be present. Communion services in the Presbyterian -> church of this place, Rev. G. A. Trenholm, pastor, will begin on Friday night, 23rd instant, and continue through Sunday. Chester. Correspondence of the Yorkville Enquirer. LETTER FROM ROCK HILL. Rock Hill, S. C., January 19.?The town election for Intendant and Wardens, on the 12th instant, was quite a lively contesf, there being two tickets. A meeting of the citizens, on Saturday previous, nominated a regular ticket from which a majority bolted on the day of election. The regular nominee for ~ .fil. L .li -? Intendant was also uie cnoice 01 me uuiwre. The ticket elected is as follows: Intendant? Capt. Allen Jones; Wardens?J. V. McFadden, R. J. Hagans, W. L. Roach, D. Hutchk ison. The council, on assuming their duties, elected W. M. Steele as towu marshal, and W. M. Frew as secretary and treasurer. In addition to the sale of lots mentioned in my last, of the J. N. McElwee property, anoth er has been sold from the same parcel, to T. C. * Robertson & Co. During the coming sum mer it is probable our town will be made lively by the sound of the saw, hammer and trowel. A new mercantile firm nas been formed in our town?Howe & Brown?as successors to J. M. Howe & Co., which firm was dissolved by mutual consent. Hon. I. D. Witherspoon paid us a professional visit last Friday and Saturday. We were glad to see him looking so well. He seemed to be in fine spirits, and expressed himself as highly pleased with the beauty, life and prosperity of our little town. The members of Terpsichorean Society gave a complimentary hop last Friday night, in' Roddy's hall, in honor of our worthy young friends, Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Moore, the marriage of whom was consummated in the city of Charleston on 31st of December last. Mrs. Walter J. Moore, nee Miss Bessie Moffet, is no stranger in this community. She was the assistant teacher in Mrs. Reid's school. While here in that capacity and occupation, she endeared herself to all who bad the pleasure of forming her acquaintance. We gladly * welcome her in our midst as Mrs. Moore. I learn that the post office at Fort Mill was broken open last Wednesday nighty though I have heard no particulars. A fearful complaint comes to us from many farmers that the flv is working great havoc on the wheat. Some fields, which were green and beautiful last week, to day present the appearance of dead stubble. The strange part of the visitation is that while one field is devastated by the insect, the adjoining field is unmolested. Our town is now the owner of a new and beautiful hearse, built by W. G. Reid & Co., of this place. Lux. Be on time; for prevention is better than cure. All coughs and Colds and such affections of the throat and lungs as lead to consumption are cured by Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup. Price 25 cents. Commercial. . YORKVILLE, January 21.?Cotton, 9 to 12. McLendon <fe Co.?Gentlemen: Please pay the premium offered by our Society, for the best yield, per acre, of cotton and corn, in this county, hy the use of the "HOME FERTILIZER," to Mr. J. B. Lindsey. Our committee find by careful measurement, that he made 14,000 1 CI o..w>o nhnnt f>XUi ptJUIIUB srcu V."WfcWX| Ull v/4 mi CO, VI au?/i?v ??vv pounds to one acre; and he also made 135 bushejs of corn on one and three quarters (1 j) acres, about 77 bushels to the acre. JNO. ROBERSON.Pm. J. A. LEAK, Trcas. J SO. PATRICK, See. The above extraordinary yield of cotton and corn, made on the average lands of Anson Co., N. C., speaks for itself. The amount made with the use of the "HOME FERTILIZER" alone ; a manure manipulated at home. We can give you many other cases, just as strong ahd authentic. On the success.of the "HOME" there are and will be, hundreds of imitations; formulas started, similar to ours, for one or two dollars per ton less, of cheap and oflen impure chemicals. So boware. Bny the genuine, when you know you will cot a good, cheap and reliable manure. The "HOME FERTILIZER," mixed at home, without Cotton Seed or Stable Manure, will make more cotton or corn, foramountof money invested, than any Fertilizer on the market.
