CorrurpoBdenoe of the Yorkvitle Enquirer. LETTER PROM CHESTER. Chester, December 4,1876. , A number of peraonB from this place went to Colombia on last Monday night to attend the opening of the Legislature on the next day. On the same train were two members of the Legislature from this county, John Lee and Purvis Alexander, both colored. While they voted for Hampton, they ran upon, and. otherwise supported the Republican ticket A good deal of moral suasion was brought to bear upon them with the view of obtaining their help in behalf of the Democratic cause in Columbia. They talked very well, but whether or not their acts will correspond with their words remains to be seen. Tbey have \ . each received great favors from the whites, aad now have an opportunity of showing their i appreciation therefor. Lee, when he was arrested recently on the charge mentioned in my last correspondence, gave two prominent white \ citizens as his bondsmen for his appearance at the next term of the Court of Geueral Sessions, and was discharged. Alexander, by the patronage of the whites, has made a considerable amount of money by the wagon and blacksmithing business. Great interest was manifested by citizens here, last week, respecting political developments in Columbia. Dispatches giving the latest information were read with the greatest avidity. The excitement occasioned by the situation materially interfered with business. The desire to make the "almighty dollar" was for once, in a measure, lost sight of in the effort to hear the latest news. The greatest indignation was felt and expressed at the monstrous act of usurpation of Chamberlain in filling the State House with Uoited States troops in order to carry out bis own ambitious ^ ends. Men who at one time gave him their bigbest admiration and praise for his brave akd patriotic course, now heaped upon him thvr strongest condemnation. Any good thu he had done was entirely forgotten in the graft wrongs he had perpetrated. ^sveYal of our citizens were called by telegraroto Columbia on Wednesday night. Amonglheaa^waa Gen. W. A. Walker, who wtMuramuned to the capital by Governor HaiipftOii. - Gen. Walker, thoiigh a staunch DefAprnt, is exceedingly popular with "thecolored people of this county. If any body could s^coeed in turning our Chester delegation froiksthe error of their Radical ways, he if the vei\ man. Dr. A. H. Davega was also called to Cjplumbia. . On Thusday a number of our friends from the countrySwere in town for the purpose of hearing thef news. Considerable joy was manifested upon the reception of the news that the StataHouse was in the possession of tHe Democratic members. With this point gained the opintpn was entertained that the ?nn At a lata hour on uatltiy I?OO OlUIVOfc WWM. W Thursday afternoon & dispatch was received from General Wauker, bearing the signihcant words, ''We hold the fort, and will camp upon | the ground," Thai was received with great delight. During the excitement private dispatches of a political nature soon .became public property.. The feeliug was entertained that everybody had a right to koow all that could be kzawn respecting the political situation. ) A drove of Kentucky hogs were in town on Thursday. They sold at 71 cents, gross. The day was alfthat could be desired for the killing of bogsJ It was very cold and clear. ThsnksgivW Day was observed to a very limited, degrewt this place. The Methodist was the onlyChurch at which divine service was held,. When Hampton has been inaugu rated^and Jpe government of the State is in DSmocnftic hands, then the people will rejoice and fe grateful. The colored Democrats of Chester gave a .-supperjm Thursday night, and invited some of thef? friends of the white race. Giles J. Pa?>a*n Plan was nrpapnt. and made a rrood I J which he congratulated the colored y-ofDheeterwpofl the results of the i performed by them during the aign. Jas. Walter, colored, made o which he exhorted his brethren ie political faith to be good and jrkers in behalf of the Democratic le supper was splendid, and every?ed off pleasautly and agreeably, red Radicals manifested a great deadmitted to the supper-room, but were informed that their presence was not desired. Saturday was a busy day in town. A large amount of cotton was sold at fair prices. A good roany.persons were here from the country; some on business and others for the purpose of hearing the news. The latter reason is the governing one with the majority of persons at the present time. The Union-Herald, in a recent issue, stated that the Republicans of Chester county, lately elected to the various county offices, had been served with a notice that if they attempted to qualify and discharge the duties of the same, they would be killed. To express it mildly, this is a lie. Dr. A. P. Wylie, who had been in Columbia for several days, returned home on Saturday night He takes a hopeful view of the OUUdblUU. A number of citizens from this place will go to Columbia to-night. They are of the opinion that their services may be required in behalf of the cause they hold dearer than the;r J j V0S. Mr. F. B. Worthy and Mr. DeKalb Russell, both of this county, lost their gin houses by fire on.last Friday night This was the atrocious work of incendiaries. Worthy was insured ; Russell was not Besides their gin houses, both lost cotton. McCarley, who killed Alexander George, is still at large. . Qui. * m t&T The editor of the National Republican is the authority for the statement that a movement is now on foot to have Governor Hayes withdraw from the Presidential contest, and then have the Republican Electors cast their votes for Grant, who, having the means and the power, will use them to instal himself in the office of President. We have tried Dr. Bull's Cough Sjrup in oar family, and can assert that it is the best remedy for a cough or cold ever introduced. Price, 25 cents.
