freedmen, tcnHHVen Gray, Fleming Gray, Guy Owens andIsaac Castles, and also Abner Holley, who depose, in substance, as follows : Steven Gray says Jerry Walker, Charles Smith, Dunlap and Beamguard, white, and Green Davis, colored, visited his place, about the 1st of March, in disguise ; they did not find him at home, but carried off his gun?a Confederate musket. Fleming Gray says his house was visited, about the 1st of March, by Green Davis, colored, James Gladden ana Lawson Dunlap, disguised; they entered his house; they did no injury, but threatened him. Guy Owens says that, about the 1st of March, three persons, disguised, unknown to him, entered his house, took Mm out and whipped him well, j and he believes that Adam Hardin knows who they are. Isaac Castles says that, on the ; 24th of February last, he was visited by Gar-! land Smith, William Carter, Walker &mitlh j Khett McColluru and Isaac Prysock, colored, I all disguised; that they took hold of him a^d carried him out of his house and then caljM for "Number Two," when he made his escape; shots were fired after him, but he does notj know how many; when they came, they said they wanted his gun, but he told them that it j was not there?that he had left it at the mus-1 taring ground. Abner Holley says that he { lives on Mr. David Pendergrast's place, and | that he was visited, about the 2d of Marqh, by j persons in disguise?how many in number he ; ' does not know?and that he was struck thj* ty-nine lashes by three persons, whtfffi he be-; heves to be Dr. Willjpm McCollum, Hugh Pandercrraat and John Chalk, and that the t said lashes were inflicted with the strap of his ; gun. Since the last sitting of (fee court, vC have , raunJei* .cowemtted in the' county by white persona; one was committed in a personal quarrel about sotpe property, and the murderer immediately fied and has not yet been arrested; a true bill has been found against him at thi&ierm for the offence. The other murder was * committed by four white persons, in the night tune, undisguised; the two colored persona who saw them did not know any of them, and it is not known for what he was murdered. Weythegrand jurors, upon our oaths, are compelled to say, from the testimony which we have taken and from oar knowledge of the 1 different parts, of the county, that the allega- 1 tions contained in the proclamation of Uie , President of the United States are without , . foundation and mustrbethe resnit-of falsehood , communicated to him by persons equally re-; gardless of good order andtbe peace of society, and whose only aim is their own elevation to . public place as a. reward for their excessive partisan seaL ] *_ *** * * * We would say that, in regard to the murder 1 of Bird McLure, we examined the Hon. Bar- i ney Humphries, but we could elicit no facts J from him that would lead to the discovery of the'murderer. We also examined Squire Sims ( and Margaret McLure, a brother and wife of ] the deceased, who informed, us that John Jag- 1 gers had told Squire Sims that he knew Borne ( -? ? ? ?m*a?a itAMMAnt/wl vniik fkn i ui Lilt) jwriies tuu ncio kuuuclicu n i>u , murder of Bird McLure, and also that Lewis Jeter had told Margaret McLure that he (Lewis Jeter) knew the parties. We sent i Squire Sims to bring Lewis Jeter before us, but he said that Lewis Jeter was sick and 1 could not attend, and, further, that John j J aggers lived fifteen miles from here aud that we could not send for him. A MAMMOTH BROKER'S OFFICE. If any of onr readers wish to get an insight iu to the intricacies and profits, of the broker- : age business, they should secure a few claims against the various departments of our State government, and then present them for pay- ment in Colombia. The first thing th&mtill J hear is, "There's not a dollar in theJPffiaSary.** . But' fn a short time some one witl carelessly ( 21 whisper in your, ear, "If you call on , r. he will help you ^ut it through.'" j You call, and Mr.- ,wbo is not a State of )ks wise and dojjbtful?"afraid therms, -j ce?l(us of suchiclairas here?no mon surer absent,, Ac., but closes with , rill you take foritf' Being hard up : ey, you propose a deduction of 5 per fou astonish Mr. ? , who informs t money is worth II.per oent. a month, , paper, and as it is doubtful when iisn will be paid, you mOsfc "come nuch better than that Well, jftur ies press hard, and you propose ten "Can't promise on cnai?nave seeu ^RHroany like claims sold at 25 per cent." Yon study, perhaps say "cuss words," but he is as stolid as a rock. In a fit of desperation, with, probably, not five dollars in your pocket, and hotel bills and traveling expenses to be met, you agree to the shave, and hand over the claim. Mr. takes it, cooly telling you he will "try and get it for you" next day, or in that afternoon at such an hour. You, of course, suppose he will go and sell it io some private individual who has a little money to risk on such pnceftyin (?) claims. Not so. Watch Mr.;??close and you will find him wending his way to the State House. You cannot tell which room he eWers; but wait patiently. In a short tinje he efterge9. Keep your eye on him, or if you think be suspects you of watching him, get a friend to do it for you. See him enter a certain Bank and hand over to the feller a check. Without hesitation the greenbacks ire transferred and snugly deposited in Mr. 's pocket before he gets out of the door. At the appointed hoWP yqu call, npd are informed that after a great deal of mancaqverinjr and much hard begging the claim has been sold?he don't tell yon that he has sold you too?and you pocket the amount of your claim, minus the 25 per cent. The moral of all this is, 25 per cent discount will draw money from an empty Treasury.? Vnion Timet. The Great Southern Piano Manufactory.?We refer with special pleasure to the advertisement of the Great Southern Piano Manufactory of Messrs. Wm. Kuabe & Co., of Baltimore. This factory is now one of the largest in the world ; it is a magnificent five story structure, fronting an entire block on Eutaw st, and covering^ together jwith the lumber yards attached, some two and one-half? acres of ground.' Three hundred and fifty men are constantly employed turning oQt over forfy > instruments per week. Among the thousand and one Pianos offered to the publio, we scarcely know any instru \ raent so faHy uniting all the desirable quali_ tios sought fnr as the Knabe Piano. It is a matter of soirie difficulty and perplexity to in7 experienced persons to select a good instrijJ ment of any capacity. We too often rely upon the judgment of friends in the selection of a piano, arid are th'us frequently disappojnt ed. The only sure way, in our opinion, is t( go to the best maker. For this reason, we re * commend to our readers to purchase Piano: r _ of Wm. Knabe <ft Go's manufacture. Tbi: will relieve them the vexatious necessity o wasting time in a long search. The reputa tion of the Knabe Pianos is an infallibl euarfnty of excellence. For durability w ^would specially recommend them, as bein, made in a southern city, with special view t the trying changes of a southern climate, The State Survivors' Association.v The third annual meeting of the State Surv vors' Association will be held in Columbia o Thursday, the 9th November, when Qenert Jqbal 4- Early will deliver an address befoi -the aasdteirition. We'are glad to see that tl different counties are completing their organ zations, and we trust that every part of tl State will send delegates to the annual gat ering. There will certainly be no lack of a traotions at the capital in the secqnd week November. The meeting of the Suryiyoi Association is both important and interestin and it is hinted that General Early will tal A* the opportunity of revealing some of the u - y' written history of the war. There will be t k / annual Fair of the State Agricultural ai Mechanical Association, with its splendid d play of implements, produce and stock, ai its crowds of joyous visitors. The South Gi olina Club give their annual ball, which ii always a recherehi&ff&ir, and 'there is talk, be sides, of a tournament and a railroad conven tion. These should be enough, in all con ; science, to attract to Columbia, for a few days every one who can find, in duty or in pleasure ; an excuse for fleeing for a few days from the cankering cares of business life.? Charlesior News. What is Wanted.?A prominent Radical of this city, of the carpet-bag claas, was heard to say that he hopea that the United : States troops engaged in making arrests in the up-country would oe fired into by some of the citizens. Then, said he, we would fix them. We mention this suggestive incident, in order to show the animus dfthose persons who have conspired, intrigued and worked for the purpose of bringing military arrests upon our people. It becomes our people to act with the greatest prudence and discretion,. We should deprecate any conduct calculated to play into the hands of our unscrupulous foes abroad and at home. It is not unmanly, at this time, to yield to power. Let our.jeople everywhere exercise a rare discretion. At the same time, let them cultivate a spirit that does not despair, and a faith that hopes for better tinaes. What there is of right and justice in their case will ultimately be vindicated and will prevail.?Coluvibia Phmnix.
