CUAKLilaS l -w.?*J** <fcc.?Tko arrivals at the Southern ports, for the Wo^x up to Friday , last show a small decrease, and were 98,544 bales, against 104.601 bales fue week before, and 71,420* bides for *be same lime last year. It is thought that this slight falling off in the supplies indicates that theamouDt. of weekly receipts have passed toeir maximum, and that for the future th? arrivals eoming forward will show a steady decline. New Orleans is the great point of supply, and at that port they were 51.301 tales for the week, being over half the total. The entire amounts at the chief Southern centres show about the following figuros up to the latest dates: , " /" \ /> " " 1870. 1S69. In the English market which opened at Hid per pound for middling uplands, tne rates receded to 113d per pound; at New York, which began at 25},. they fell of to 24} and 24}; and at this port, which commenced at 24 and 24} cents, they have been rather well maintained, this grade closing at 24 cents per pound, ' The supply of the staple in sight at the latest dates was as" fbllows: 1870. 1869. Middling uplands now 113d; then -* 12}d per pound. Corn.?The receipts have continued to come forward liberally, and were about 30,000 bushels for the week, principally from Baltimore and Norfolk. There has been rather a good demand for country consumption, but the full supplies have caused prices to soften. We note sales in bulk, of prime white at $1.12 per bushel, weight. Jobbing parcels of prime white were selling at $1.20 and $1.22 per bushel, weight, sacks included. Flour.?There has been a faiify sustained inquiry for this article, both for city and country demand, prices of high grades continuing steady, while fine'and supers were slightly firmer in consequence of an increased demand and a reduction of the stocks of these descriptions. We quote Northern and Western fine at $5 and $5.25 per barrel; super $5.50 and $5.75 per barrel; extra $6 and $7 per barrel; and family at $7.25 and $8 per barrel; Southern qualitiesare in moderate supply, and may be quoted at $7 and $7.75 per barrel lor oxtra, and $8 and $9 per barrel for family. Salt.?'There have been no receipts of this article. Lots from store selling at $1.40 and $1.50 per saek. Financial. NEW YORK, Feb. 21.?Gold quiet at $1,182. special lloiitts. Messrs. Wilcox, Gibbs <b Co.: . ,x Au- , ' ; *,.-j til I have not replied earlier to your inquiry as to irrelative merits of the fertilizers used in this vicinity, from the fact that? the ctbps of cotton were not ~~ J sufficiently matured to enable raft tp' form ah ac- _ curate opinion. We were then in the midst of a " drouth without parallel for duration and severity, jj in the memory of the oldest inhabitant. Not a raltl frotn first of May till last of August, and the ~ result of my observation is. I know of none which excelled 3'our Manipulated in capacity to endure * long and severo drouths. I used the Manipnla- ^ ted on very thin gray soil, with stiff clay substra- l< turn, at the rate of 250 pounds pferacre, and shall make about 500 pounds seed cotton to the acre. I left a small space unmannred, which will notmake more than 150 pounds, per acre. I have had no rust, even on ground predisposed to it. I, there- * fore, conclude, in view of these facts, that your c Manipulated is at least equal, if not superior, to any fertilizer used in this region?and there were a number of varieties used, loo, at that. _ Respectfully, JAMES iff REID. .To Consumptions.
