lino of shadow will have an annular or tot*? eclipse. In the case Wore us, the moon has nearly her maximum diameter, yet even in-this rare Instance the central track, where the eclipse will be total, is only about 140 miles in width. The moon's shadow will -first strike the earth at 14 minutes past 2 o'clock, P. M. (Yorkville time) in longitude 144? 20' cast of Greenwich, and latitude 30? f>3' North. It leaves the earth at 7 o'clock P. M. in longitude 90? 13' West latitude 14? 48' North. The central eclipse first touches in longitude 117? 31' East and latitude 52? 41' North. The same leaves the earth in longitude 07? 29' West and latitude 31? 15" North. The duration of the eclipse ycnerul will then be 4 hours 40 minutes, while the central eclipse will last only 2 hours 30 minutes. I The duration at any particular place will be much more limited as may be seen by our figures. It may not be uninteresting to trace out the ceo. tral track o'pon the earth's surface. It first touches the Altai Mountains on the Sontlicrn boundary <tf Asiatic Russia, thence it tees in a Northeast di rcction and crosses Belmng's Strait into Bussiaa America. Thonce it changes indirection Southeast ^ across British America. It first strikes the United States iq the Northwest corner of DeeoUh, goes diagonally across that torritory and Iowa near'Des Moines and Burlington; thence across Idiqpie into*Indianancar Torre Ilaute, then into and across Kentucky near Frankfort and Lexington. It enters North Carolina North of Mount Mitchell; passes near Lexington, Ashboro' and Sunimerville, between llaleigh and Fayettevillc and leaves our coast not far from Cape Loqkout. Finally* it passes off the earth about 40) miles Southeast from said cape. A map will show that th? central eclipse thus travels aver .about 0,800 miles in two and a half liours. In order to*give a clear conception of mtr eclipse we append a diagram. A local eclipse will be best understood by conceiving the apparent paths of the' sun and moon as [traced out in the concavity of the heavens. Tiig line Y X (see diagram) will then represent the * sun's path or the "eeliptie" near the moon's ffs ohiJ ilia Una F Tt iha ninnn'i: fin. UTIIU^Uq IUVUU J UMU VH\> ju* ** v.iw ?.vw w . pare at path. Now they are both moving eastward (leaving out of all consideration the apparent motion westward, caused by the real motion of*the earth oh its axis); but the moon moves about thirteen times faster than the sun, thus overtaking f him and passing over his bright disk from West ( to East, but not quite centrally a's seen from here. Of course the dark disk of the moon is uot visible in the glare of the sun's light unfil it is projected ( upon the sun's disk. To make the matter more ( simple, we may consider the sun stationary at Sv and the moon to be hjoving with the excess of motion eastward- along the line B E, but slightly tending Southward. When sl^c reaches B on her j track, her dark disk will first come in contact with the bright disk of the sun, and the eclipse begins i at Yorkville. When she reaches "M, her center J will have approached nearest that of the sun; and } we have then the gratest eclipse. Tlxjre will then be but a narrow thread of light on the sun's Southern edge?while the moon will overlap the sun's ' Northern limb about 1-11 of his semi-diameter, as shown by the dotted line in our diagram?>ouly a few miles north of here the eclipse will bo total for an instant?when the moon reaches Ex the L eclipse ends. . ( The hours and half hours aro marked off" on the i moons path, so that by taking the semi-diameter of the moon with a pair of dividers, and describing k circles from any desired point; the pha^e of the | eclipse at that time will be shown! ' r. i . 1 .1 _ . .l _ ?__ _ _ f it uiay De nouceu mat, ine moon s moHoirrx increasing ; also that her patli should be represented : * as very slightly curved Southward. By calculation, and as near as can be shown, by diagram, the eclipse begins at Yorkrille at oO lain- . utes and 43 seconds after 4 o'clock p. m. It is at | its maximum at 49 minutes and 54 seconds after 5 i o'clock, and endsat 42 minutes.20 seconds after 6 ] o'clock. Its duration is 1-hour-51 minutes 37 ' seconds. When at its maximum the ocntros of ! sun and uioon will be about 47 seconds of a degree apart and the thread of light on the Southern edge will be only about 3 seconds in width. To obtain a correct idea of the position, hold* the diagram so that the line S Z shall be perpen-^ dicular to the horizon, the point Z towards the zenith and N towards the North pole. It will then be seen where the first contact may be ex4 pccted. As the eclipse happens so late in day, it will perhaps not be so remarkable as it would be' otherwise. Iq fact, these solar cilipsos, which occur near the meridian, are always the most striking, other things being equal. Of course, when the eclipse is greatest it will be noon soniewliere. ? This one wiH be central at noon in longitude 145? 8' West and latitude 01? 47' North. Hence the spot u]>on our ourth most favored by the coming t eclipse is a little West of Mount St. Elias in sian America. I state this for the inforntatiop of such of your enthusiastic readers as may wish to observe it from that cool and elevated region. Notime, however, is to be lost in seating out, even with . the advantages of the Pacific Rail lioad. But if not wishing to go so far, there are other very favorable points of observation in our Northwestern States and territories. I notice in tho journals, that parties arc making preparations to start for Burlington, Iowa; they being, among other things, well provided with superior instruments for taking photographic impressions of the eclipse. \ Those of us who are compelled to remain, at home in the heat of the dog days, may "grin and bear" and "see what is to be seen." We may, ? l 1-1 1 11.-11 il.. 1....1 -1. tlirougu smoseu glasses, ocuuiu me gruuuui uuscuration of the sun by- the'moon, provided tiny clouds do not spoil our fun by obscuring both. f At any rate let not a worse evil befal any of us) i in allowing our vision to be impaired by too freL quently looking through the bottom of drinking W glasses. administratrix' notice.
