pMNnii ??nartmf at. IT EAirr. ~" A few days since a constable in an interior town w*4 called upon to fulfil a writ of ejectment, issued by a son of tbe Emerald Isle against a fellow countryman. Dan, who never waits for persuasion to do his duty, instantly called on Pat, and found him seated in the house named in the writ, enjoying a "dndeen." "Qooa morning, Pat,'' says Dan, pulling out the writ. . "The top 'o the morning to yourself," replied Pat, undisturbed. "Patrick, I have business with you," continued flie constable. "Bedad, and shure you have; and why wouRyebe after calling out me, sir ?" "T have a writ here commanding me to eject you and your goods from this house. It's a rather unpleasant duty??" "Ah! It is Michael O'Callahan that ordered ye, shore "Yes, bit; Michael is the man." "And did he pay the costs, Misther Constable ?" "Certainly; we always demand advanced costs in these oases." "Thin ye've been paid for yer work shure ?" ' "Certainly." "Thin ye can do it; divil a bit will Patrick O'Brien stan' in the way of a man's working for his pay."This rather astonished Dan, who had expected, as usual in such cases, to meet with serious resistance. He doffed his eoat, and after an hour's hard labor suooeeded in removing the Irishman's goods into the street. After securing the house from improper intrusion, Dan, fatigued with the labors he had performed, started away. In bidding him good day, Pat, who was seated on a part of his goods, with the "dudeen" still ??? Itra Bwrntk rrnnftrltM? "And I'm much obliged to ye, sir, for saving me all the trouble." ?How?" "Faith, and wasn't I going to move ? and wasn't I jiat taking off my coat to lug out the duds, sir, when yon come and carried 'cm all out for me, without charging me a cint at all. I am much obliged to ye, sir, and hope ye'll call again when Patrick O'Brien wants his goods down stairs, sir." Dan suddenly had business in another direction, and, though the joke was on himself, he let it out afterwards. A Little Story of Daniel Webster. ?"Darnel Webster," remarked old Ool. Gumey, as he trimmed a quid of niggerhead, and fastened it securely between two decayed teeth in the left aide of his mouth, "Darnel Webster was a great man. There wa'nt nothin' mean about him. I've hearn him talk, bat 'twan't his talk so much as his ginerosity that tuck me. He had a kinder careless way like, that kept him from getting rich. He never seem to think what things cost. I was acomin' np the Hudson River along with him once, ana in the mornin' Darnel Webster and me was washin' onr fanps and alicken' our bar in the cabin. and he took ont a toothbrush and brushed his teeth. I didn't see no other toothbrush around, so I borrowed his'n. And after I used it I handed it back to him, and what do you think ? Why, Darnel Webster just slung that toothbrush right inter the river. And I s'pose next day he went and bought him a new one. That's all he cared about money! There ain't no such men as Darnel Webster living now," concluded the Colonel, meditatively, as he spirted a a stream of tobacco juice into the fire place at the other end of the room. yy One of the zealous Chaplains of the Army of the Potomac called on a Colonel noted for his profanity, in order to talk about the religious interests of the men. He was politely received, and motioned to a seat on the chest, when the following dialogue ensued: ChaD.?Colonel, you have one of the finest regiments in the army. CoL?I believe so. Chap.?Do you think you pay sufficient attention to the religious instruction of your men? Col.?(doubtfully)?Well, I don't know. Chap.?A lively interest has been awakened in the ? th Massachusetts (a rival regiment). The Lord has blessed the labors of his servants, and ten have already been baptized. Col.?(excitedly)? Is that so ? (To the attendant:) Sergeant Major, have fifteen men detailed immediately for baptism. I'll be sworn if I'll be outdone by any Massachusetts regiment. l jfcg*- One of our oldest and most respecta ' > - ? ii -i A. A -L i:!C citizens canea into rae esiaonsnuieuv ui j??king druggist recently, and overcome by the sultry weather, sat down in a chair and was soon enjoying a sound slumber.? Observing that the sleeper had on a fine new hat the druggist gently removed it, substituting in its place an old one, with a sadly dilapidated and rusty crown. The drowsy citizen at last awoke, and after a few "h-hums," felt the hat, which was rather a tight fit. Removing it from his head and taking a steady gaze at the battered relic, he turned to the druggist, and inquired: "Did I sleep a long time ?" "Yes," replied the joker, "a very long time."? "Well," continued the first, "I should judge I had, for when I came into your store this d?-d old hat was bran new!" Jgf A very little boy, after giving everybody a good night kiss, kneeled at his mother's side to say his evening prayer.-? His mother had that day been teaching him the piece commencing, "You'd scarce expect one of my age," etc., and it appears that these verses were running through his mind. "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep." "If I should chance to fall below Demosthenes or Cicero, don't view me with a critic 8 eye.' "Stop, 8top," said his mother, "that isn't * a part of the prayer." "Yes it is mamma. 'Don't view me with a critic's eye.' " fl?^ During the war, a Georgia soldier, while in camp near the house of his sweet heart, sent her a boquet with a card attached, upon which was the following poetic effhsion: "Axoept this bokayfrom a feller Who oft has hard the kanons beller, Has listened to the fife's a too ten, And helped to doo a beep ov shoo ten ; Has seen the war clouds darkly rise. Like fifty buzzards when they flize, Who now is bigger than his dad, And wants to marry mity bad." fl?* Tim asked old "ten per-cent," what he wanted to accumulate so much money for.
