their part would be best calculated to conciliate it. The most important thing for the South is to know on what terms a majority of the Northern people will consent to become their friends, and they have done well to seek this information from a judicious, truth-speaking man like Mr. Adauis, who understands the party from whioh oonverts are to be made, as thoroughly as he does the partv which is spontaneously friendly to the South. Their inviting such a man to address them evinces their willingness to receive wholesome counsel; and Mr. Adams speaks to them under a sense of the re- \ sponsibihty which attaches to the giver of advioe which will probably be taken. We suppose the 5 speech at Columbia has been more carefully medi- \ tated than any other which he will deliver in the ; South, and therefore made arrangements for hav- \ ins it telegraphed in full. 1 TKia front- and firithfiil fmeecli. made in a SDirit c so friendly and so courageous, will have a more < salutary effect from thefact that it is not obtruded, < but made at the request of men who eqjoy the oonfi- ] dence of the South; men who do not seek flattery ^ but truth as any friendly tongue can have to speak , it It is the misfortune of the South that it has i had so little candid, discriminating criticism.? ] Whenever it has committed an error, the error has 1 been caught up and magnified with such monstrous exaggeration, that resentment of the libel has blinded the South to its mistake. The friends of the South,'participating in their just resentment, have been more forward to denounce the calumny than to mark the fault But the important thing j for the South is to avoid any missteps which may ] be perverted by its enemies to give oolor to such t calumnies and ahord a handle to its unscrupulous ? enemies. To give judicious advice to the South, under present circumstances, requires an amount -i of tact, delicacy, friendliness, and honest freedom, which few men in these excited times are cool e- i nough to exercise, and which no man would be likely to exhibit except by the invitation of men who possess the full confidence of the Southern people. Mr. Adams keenly feels the iniustioe which has been done to the Southern people, but as his object is to advise them for their advantage, he does not permit his sympathy to blind him to , any of the facts of the situation.
