r free blacks cannot enjoy, anywhere in the free States, the advantages of equal social condition with the whites, it is proposed to colonize them in some portion of America, oat of the present limit of the United States, where they can be under such protection as this Government may be willing or able to afford them. This project originated, I believe, with Mr. Blair, when Representative in Congress from Missouri, and it now holds a prominent plaoe in the remodeled Republican creed, as recently promulgated by Mr. Bates, of Missouri, who, next to Mr. Seward, is the favorite candidate of the Republicans for the Presidency. There is one objection to the scheme, to wit: its impracticability. But, independently of that, it would be a very good scheme. To colonize the people of color, or even a portion of them equal to the annual increase, would be a heavy expense to the Federal Government; and if they refuse to go, how can they be foroed to go? To purchase suitable territory for them would be a difficult matter. The Abolition wing of the party would oppose the measure, as they have done the Liberian scheme, because, as they say, it would remove an evil attendant upon slavery.
