^musing $tofohtg. A STREAK OF LIGHTNING. The Dootor thus fervently appealed to laid down his hand at enchre, poshed his spectaolea np to his forehead, gave his half empty tumbler an intense look, and gratified our curiosity as to the origin of the cant phrase, "boys, did you see that streak of lightning ?" "Yon mast know, my dear young friend, that St. Louis was not always as big a place as it now is, and accomodations for man and beast were not fifteen or twenty years ago as they are now. "About those days the tavern at which I topped, and it was the principal one in the town, contained one long room, like the cabin of a steam boat, which served in the various capacities of a ball room, a hall of jus- ] tioe, a common council room, a theatre, and, when the town was full, for a sleeping a part men t for such ot toe surplus population as were not lucky enough to get accomodation in a more limited space. "Well, business once carried me there in midsummer. As the town was thronged, I was put with thirty or forty others in the great accomodation room, and consigned for the night to my pallet of straw. I oame in late that night, for I had met some acquaintances, and we had made rather fast time of it, ao that I found all the mattresses ocoupied, save the ono reserved for mo, and each occnpant fast asleep. The landlord had given me a small piece of candle, about an inch long, to light me to bed, and as he was too sleepy or too lazy to get a candlestick, I took the tallow in my hand and marched up to my dormitory. It was a fearfully hot night, and the temperature, of course, not mnch lessened by the heat radiating from the carcasses of thirty or forty sleeping men. "I soon found my bed, and I forthwith proceeded to "unshock." Sticking the candle on the edge of my chair, I carefully laid my clothes on the back of it, so as to guard as far as possible against all probability of their contact with the tallow, and I was proceeding to blow oat my light, when in my anxiety to save my clothes, the only suit I had with me, the thought occured that I had better remove the candle altogether.? After a glance around the room, I found this to be a matter of some difficulty. I saw that every chair was occupied. I was afraid to set it on the floor, and the fire place was too far of to justify even the remotest hope of my ever regaining my conch, once away from it in the dark. While I was in this quandary my eye fell upon the form of a large ? * rv> nn/lrtMn votfl man, woo was sieepiug at a ucuicuuuuo mw, about ten feet off. From the excessive heat that prevailed., be bad thrown off every unnecessary article of clothing. He was breathing at the same time as hard, and snoring as loud as if he were determined to extract every possible article of enjoyment from those musical accompaniments. "Quietly advancing towards my snoring neighbor, I soon found a firm and permanent lodgement for my piece of candle, now conconsiderably reduced, upon a very prominent and very exposed portion of my fat friend, and he was so profoundly asleep that I bad no difficulty in a fixed basis for my burning tallow. As soon as I had, by actual experiment, satisfied myself that my "illuminator" would in its upheavings turn neither to the right nor the left, but would burn teadily where I had set it. I stole back to my place in bed as quietly as possible, and oon tried to get up a small gamut of extra noises with my nose and throat, but it was no go. Every incipient effort at a snore was sure to terminate in a titter, and so I just lay still and watched the course of events. "I never saw a piece of candle take so muoh time to burn half an inch. I thought it bad the lives of nine cats, but burn on it did, and still snored on my fat neighbor.? The light gradually approached the period of its extinguishment. I confess that it was about the most exciting moment of my life. At last, to my inexpressible delight, I saw the sleeper give a twitch, and then for a moment all was still; then followed a spasmodic action a little more violent; a calm of an instant succeeded, when the candle permed a circle in the air, expiring as it reached the floor, and the fat man wide awake and perfectly erect was beard to exclaim, "boys did you see that streak of lightning? Anybody dead? I'mhit;doDt you amell scorched meat ?"?Exchange paper. TRACING A PEDIGREE. Some men are boastful of their ancestry, while others are entirely devoid of all pride of birth, and have no more respect for the genealogical table of their forefathers than they have for Poor Richard's Almanac. The late John Rendolph, of Roanoke, used to assert his belief that he was descended from the celebrated Indian Princess, Pocahontas, hnt it 5s not known that he ever established hia claim to that distinction. Many years ago there lived in a near State a young gentleman who took it into his haad that, like John Randolph, he was of Indian descent, though, unlike John, he did not know exactly the tribe to which his forefathers belonged. The idea was a perfect monomania with him, notwithstanding the efforts of his friends to convince him of the folly of his pretentions,Jto say nothing of the absurdity of them, even if they could be established. The favorite notion, however, could not be eradicated from his mind, and he promised his friends"that he would one day convince them that he was right in his claims. Having heard that a deputation of Indians were at Washington, on a visit to their great Father, the President, he promptly repaired to that city, and arranging with the gentle-: men who had them in charge, his friends in the city were surprised to receive an invitation to accompany him on a visit to the Red Men, before whom he proposed to verify his favorite pretentions. The party met as requested, and found the Indians sitting on the floor, smoking their pipes, and manifesting but little appreciation of the honor of the visit. Having arranged his friends at a respect' * TT7Vl r* Of 1 1 1 IUI distance itulu mc agcu vuivi, nuv dim regarded the visitors with stolid indifference, the young man stepped boldly from the centre, and presuming that it would require some show of energy to arouse the chiefs from their apparent apathy, he placed his hand on his breast, and said with great fearlessness. "Me?Indian?long time ago !" The chief, who was not skilled in talking English, took his pipe from his mouth, e-1 vinced no emotion whatever. The speaker ! then thinking that a more violent gesture his band upon his breast with much force and said in a louder tone? "Yes?Me?Indian?long time ago !" Without moving a muscle of his face, the old chief slowly arose from his sitting posture, and turned his eagle eye on the speaker. His friends say that the chief evidently understood, or at least appeared to understand, the meaning of the speech addressed to him, and they gazed intently on the solemn proceeding. The young man bore the searching glance of the Indian without emotion. All felt that the "time had come." Moving sufficiently close to the speaker, the Chief raised his hand, and carefully taking a lock of the young man's hair between hio fintrpr and thumb, erentlv rubbed it be O" ' o * tweea them for a moment. All stood breathless. Quietly withdrawing his hand, the Chief uttered the slight peculiar Indian grunt, and said "Nig." This altogether nnexpected denoument ended the interview, I and the discomfitted descendant of theTommyhawks retired with his friends, the latter roaring with laughter, and the former filled with a most sovereign contempt for his degenerate Indian relations ?Baltimore American.
