residence in Blandford, about the year 1767. I* is a fact well attested by documents now in possession of an aged oitizen, that a beautiful young daughter of.this Mrs. Jones, eloped from Petersburg about the year 1753. with an Italian tightrope dancer named Garibaldi, who having amassed an immense fortune in this country, returned to his own dear native Italy, where a large family and unalloyed felicity blessed the union between himself and his beautiful young Blandford bride. Mrs. Garibaldi corresponded with her father until the day of the letter's death ; and letters subsequently sent over by the children of Mrs. G., leave but little doubt of the fact that the warrior Garibaldi, now in Italy, is a direct desoendant of the Jones family, so well and favorably known in Blandford during the first half of the past centary. Melancholy Occident.?We regret to learn that the painful rumor of Friday evening has been fully authenticated, and ayoung and promising member of our community- suddenly withdrawn from earth, its joys and sorrows, its cares and perils. Mr. James H. Chambers, a son of ourrespected fellow citizen, Mr. James S Chambers, was drown-, ed, on Friday evening, under most trying circumstances. In company with three companions, Mr. Chambers was returning to Mount Pleasant from a sail, when, by a sudden lurch, the sprit from the sail was thrown overboard. Mr. Chambers, full of the ardor and spirit of youth, jumped overboard after it and quickly seized it. The place was shallow and be could stand on the bottom of the flat, the water only reaching to his waist. By the force of the incoming tide, the helpless boat drifted rapidly across, the channel towards the shore. His companions hastened to the land for oars, which having procured they returned, as speedily as possible, for their friend. He could not be found and has not since been seen. The only trace of him has been bis hat, which drifted ashore Sunday, a few rods above the spot. Mr. Chambers was a native of York District, 19 years old, and but recently out of school. Charleston Mercury. The Wheat Crop of America.?The wheat crop of this country, just harvested, is set down at two hundred and one million of bushels, or about forty millions of barrels, or one and three-fifths of barrel of flour for every one of the twenty-five millions of individuals in this country. This would not seem to be a great deal more than our own wants would require, and it would not be if we had not the other cereals, and particularly the great crop of Indian corn to held out the supply. Ohio is given a production of 20,000,000bushels; Pennsylvania 25.000,000; New York 20,000,000; Illinois, 20,000,000. The New England States hive decreased in thejr production of wheat, but tie West has increased four to one. The amount of land under wheat cultivation this year is thirtythree per cent, greater than in 1855. We frequent 1} hear of production of thirty-one bushels to the acre, but the actual production per aore does not average two-thirds of that amount. Columbia Market. JuiT 25, .
