A dispatch from St. Joseph's, 2d inst., says that the Salt Lake mail has arrived, but brings no news oT importance. Order and quiet had been restored throughout Utah, and the Mot^ mons expressed themselves highly pleased with the Territorial officers. Upon Gen. Johnston's entrance into the eity, the few remaining Mormons fled. Commissioners Powell and McCulIoch, ^ having completed the dnty assigned them, were passed at Laramie, en rovte for home. Gen. Johnston has issued a proclamation, prohibiting the soldiers and citizens from disturbing the Mormons or their cattle, nop were any of the troops allowed to enter the city nnder any pretext. The same distance has been trotted in two minntes twenty-fonr And a half seconds, and been paced in two minntes seventeen and a half seconds. In the way of endurance combined with speed, we read of ten milea trotted in harness in twentyeight minntes eight and a half seconds; twenty miles under saddle, trotted in fifty-nine minutes fifty-fire second; thirty miles in harness, trotted in three hours fifty-five minntes forty and a half ' seconds; and one hundred miles trotted in eight hours fifty-six minutes and one second. Attention Ladies 1?Miss Nancy Godfrey was killed by lightning at Beading, a week or two since, in consequence, as is supposed, of the metalic substances forming a part of her dress and toilet attracting the subtle fluid. The electric current probably passed through the gold plate of her set of teeth, thus killing her at once, and then escaped by her hoops, passing on through her garter and foot. The artificial teeth were discovered at'sorae distance, and her metalic hoops were found to be melted. Women* now-a days, are most fearfully and wonderfully made. Florida Cotton.?A friend who has recently been visiting the platation of S. C. Chambers, Esq., on Tnsoawilla Hammock, near Orange Lake, informants that he never saw a more promising crop." On one hundred and forty acres of hammock land, the cotton averages eight feet*beig;ht, and ts so covered with fruit that our informant was led to count the number of boll; and forms on several different stalks. The highest number on. one stalk was nine hundred and thirty?over half the bolls nearly matured. The lowest number was six hundred and forty-seven.?Florida (Ocaia) Companion, 8rf. Death ofciL hD. WUhwifoon. This distinguished gentleman died at the White Sulphur Springs on the 20th ult, of paralysis. In the death of CqI Witberspoon the State has sustained an irreparable toss. He was an influential* and beloved citizen, highly respected and venerated for worth and untarnished Integrity. Ho was at one time an able member of the State Sen-. ate, in which capacity he acquitted hknself in a manner both creditable and honorable to the district he represented. Few have in humble stations effected more real good than Col. Witherspoon.?Kingstrec Star. tsr The -Detroit Board of Education- have adopted as a device for their seal, a handsome young school mistress, with a thriving urchin across her lap. The left hand is uplifted, having , a stout leather strap in the act of descending upon s the youth, whose mouth is wide open, and from which the issues the motto: "Strike, but bear me!" This almost equals the waggery of the man in Muine, who wrote over the door where a teacher's / convention was in session, the words, "New En/ gland Whaling Association." f A Toast foh the Ladies.?At the one hnodred and fifty-seventh anniversary of the founding of Detroit, on the 24th instant, the Hon. lYm. A. Howard, being called upon for a speech, gave as a sentiment r* "The fair daughters of Detroit?May their virtues expand like their tkirts, and their vices grow small and beautifully less, like their bonnets." The toast brought down the house, and especially the ladies. A Weatheb Item ?The court was called. There was a cloud upon the brow of the judge. Silence rained. William Mnlligan was hailed, but William was mist. The judge thundered. The prosecuting attorney stormed. The jury's labors lightened, bnt William Mulligan, the brave, the good, had fled from the oppressor into the land of the free and the home of the brave?New Jersey. N. F. Picayune. Terrible Death.?A negro woman, belonging to Luda Cothran, living some ten miles south-east of Panola, Mississippi, was struck with lightning last week, while standing near a tree under which she had taken shelter during a storm. The lightning struck the tree and passed down ber body, openiDg all the scams of her dress, and twisting the skin of her body once or twice around her.? She died in a few hours. Columbia Market. ACGC8T 9. Cotton.?At the close of our last week's report of the cotton market, there was a fair demand for the article, at prices varying from 91@lHo. On Monday, and especially on Tuesday, of the week iust brought to a close, the market showed evident symptoms of a declining tendency, and although there was no actual change in prices, still the tendency was in favor of buyers. But on Wednesday and Thursday, r.nd indeed up to the close of the week, the demand was dull and inactive, and daring these four days prices receded J ?J, and In aome instances even more, on our former quotations, 11 $@115 being the current rates for good middling to fair. Country Bacon.?There is none of this article comiDg to market at present, and consequently we are compelled to withhold quotations altogether. lard.?ll@li$c. lb. Corn.?The supply of corn on sale is fair,' and as the demand is moderate, there is no change in prices. We still quote 65@70c. bushel. CW Peas.?There is only a moderate demand for peas, and the market is quiet but steady at 80 ?85c. ^ bushel. Flour.?There is a fair stock of flour on sale and as the demand is somewhat limited, there is no material change in prices. We still quote $2.88 ?2.50 for fine to superfine bands ; extra family flour $2 62@2.75 fl bag of 98 lbs. Weed's Patent Sewing Machine is before us. We have examined it and tried it on various kinds of work, and for once confess ourselves astonished that so simple a piece of mechanism will sew.? The complaint against Sewing Maohines generally, has been that they very easily get out of order, and become useless to the purchaser. But here 1b an exoeptia*, for there is, to all appearances.nothing to get out of repair. And we wonder again, so simple a thing will each a beautiful, straight, even and firm seam, that never can be rivaled, either in beauty or strength, by any woyk done in . the ordinary way. {t ??ws in the finest muslin or | the coarsest hardest cloth, doing every kind of j work which families require, and is also adapted to shoe and saddle manufacturers' use, as we have seen some very elegant specimens of work done on leather, that was not only handsome but strong. We have never eeen so complete a Sewing Machine before, or one we could so freely recommend to our readers, who need such a thing as this; and since Sewing Machines have become almost a necessity in every family where there is much sewing to done, w .* advise all to purchase this in preference to any^other.
